What comes to mind when you think of cannibalism? Growing up in England in the 1980s and 1990s, the media depictions of cannibals assured me it happened only within a tribal context, in far flung hot & exotic countries. This is still a prevalent myth. Throughout history, cannibalism has been documented in various cultures and contexts, ranging from religious rituals to survival acts during times of famine. For some, the idea of cannibalism arouses and excites the sexual part of their psyche. Why do some people have a cannibal kink? In this feature, I explore the heart of sexy cannibalism and take a look at what motivates an erotic fascination with the taboo practice of devouring human flesh.

Cannibal Kink - Exploring the heart of sexy cannibalism

Non-sexual reasons for human cannibalism

First, let’s quash some myths. Reasons for human cannibalism extend beyond tribal ritualistic practice, despite what old colonial writings and imagery convey. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Religious ritualistic practices
  • Survival in times of famine
  • Culturally accepted, or ‘institutionalised’ cannibalism
  • Necro-cannibalism (eating someone already dead) for ritual or survival reasons
  • Homicidal cannibalism (killing someone in order to eat them) as criminal psychopathy

Cannibalism isn’t a new fascination or practice, by any means. Ancient history provides several examples of religious and ritualistic cannibalism practiced by various cultures. One notable example is the Aztecs in Mesoamerica. The Aztecs believed that consuming the flesh of sacrificial victims during religious ceremonies allowed them to absorb the qualities and powers of the sacrificed individuals. This practice was a central part of their religious beliefs and rituals.

Another example comes from the practice of endocannibalism among the Fore tribe in Papua New Guinea. In their culture, consuming the flesh of deceased relatives was a way to honour and remember them. The Fore people believed that by consuming the remains of their loved ones, they were helping their spirits move on to the afterlife.

These historical examples shed light on the diverse cultural and religious contexts in which cannibalism was practiced. It underscores the significance of rituals and beliefs that shaped the behaviour of various societies in ancient times.

The psychology behind cannibalism fetish

It’s important to understand that those in the BDSM sphere with a kinky interest in, or full-blown fetish about, cannibalism realise that it is a fantasy and not something to pursue in reality. The elements that make the cannibal kink alluring and arousing require those involved to consent and to remain very much alive and uneaten. Some people have taboo fantasies that they would never act upon in real life, and that’s ok.

Cannibal Kink - Exploring the heart of sexy cannibalism

What exactly is the attraction to cannibalism whether as a secret kinky fascination or shared erotic fantasy? People may fetishize vore and cannibalism for various reasons:

  • Arousal from the most taboo and extreme human practices
  • Sexual fascination with gore and blood
  • Erotic excitement caused by being frightened during extreme risk scenarios
  • D/s psychological elements of the absolute vulnerability and submission from the one being eaten, and the absolute control and Dominance of the one doing the eating

What helps me understand the cannibal kink, despite not becoming aroused by the idea or illustrations of cannibalism myself, is that it epitomises the absolutes of Dominance and submission, of being in total control and of being entirely vulnerable and powerless. That’s why for those in the BDSM world with this kink, it’s the ideas and illustrations of cannibalism which incites eroticism, rather than the real-life homicidal and criminal actions.

SSC & RACK explorations of sexy cannibalism in BDSM

You can find out all about SSC and RACK in my related feature. To summarise:

SSC = Safe, Sane and Consensual

RACK = Risk Aware Consensual Kink

How can you include cannibal kink in BDSM and sexual role play? Here are some ideas to help you realise your sexy cannibalism fantasies in a SSC and/or RACK way, without anyone getting harmed in the process:

Exchange fantasy ideas in online messaging and sexts

One of my favourite forms of foreplay is when my partner and I aren’t even in the same room. You have to rely on your imaginations, using your knowledge of the other person’s turn-ons to ramp up the sexual tension and anticipation for when you meet again.

If you’re into the cannibal kink, talking about it with your partner over online messengers or via sexts is ideal. After all, it isn’t a fetish to ever be fully realised in reality; it’s more about the power and control elements involved, the fear and complete vulnerability. Exploring the themes and concepts involved through sexy chat can be extremely fulfilling for those with a kink for cannibalism.

Write your most arousing fantasy scenario

When you have intensely arousing ideas swirling around your imagination without a way to fulfil them in reality, a great way to relieve the sexual frustration is to write it down. You don’t have to be the most polished writer in the world, or even have any characters or a plot. It could simply be a brainstorming session, where you throw ideas down on the page as soon as they come to mind, in any order. You can always make sense of it all later, if you wish.

If you do end up creating an erotic story from your kinky cannibalistic fantasies, you don’t have to share with anyone. Read it time and time again as masturbatory fuel. Or, you could share it with your partner to fire up your libido ready for your next sex session. If you’d love to share your lusty cannibal erotica with a wider audience, you could post it online either on a blog or another online space such as Literotica, Tumblr or Fetlife. Staying anonymous is obviously the best option if you do choose to share your hot human flesh devouring tales online.

Get creative with your baking…
Include fantasy cannibalism elements in sensory play & edge play

You’re not just tied with bondage rope, you’re trussed up like a hog to roast. They aren’t simply punishing you with a crop or flogger to your behind, they’re tenderising the meat. Douching? Basting. Use dripping wax play candles to incorporate the heat of an imagined sizzling-skin-during-cooking element. Sensory play and medical kink toys like clamps and pinwheels can be used to apply pleasurable pain during this cannibal kink role play.

It helps to have the BDSM gear to experience the physical sensations of being bound, ‘tortured’ and treated like a piece of meat, but a lot of role play comes down to properly adopting the ‘role’ and committing to the fantasy with your choice of words.

Don’t worry, these are just props!
Consume them, or be consumed – with blood play

As the key to the ‘kink’ element of cannibal kink, absolute active consent by all parties is a must. People need to be of sound mind and have the capability to play safely, consensually and enjoy role play/power exchange within the scope of BDSM. Never engage in kinky cannibal (or any other) role play with someone who seeks to use it as a form of self-harm, or who has suicidal ideation or tendencies. Anyone with such mental health issues needs to speak to their doctor with a view to being referred to the appropriate mental health treatment.

Assuming – as I have done throughout this feature – that your sexual interest in cannibalism is simply an expression of intrigue in the extreme and taboo, is there any way to literally consume or be consumed in a safe, sane and consensual manner?

Rather than SSC, I would say that this falls into the RACK category – risk aware consensual kink. There are important safety issues to consider when consuming parts of another human which won’t lead to harm or death. Mostly this is done by blood play, where blood is drawn by pinwheels or needles, or oral sex during menstruation with cannibalistic or vampiric overtones, and blood may be taken to be included with other food consumed as a meal.

Obviously, when dealing in bodily fluids and especially blood, complete safety is required. The risks need to be fully researched prior to any activity. I am not a medical professional, so I urge you to research via more medically qualified routes. At an absolute minimum, all parties must get STI checked, and in addition you can do at-home HIV tests which offer discretion and instant results. Large quantity consumption of blood is not recommended, for either the one consuming or the one having the blood drawn. Waste products of the body may be consumed, but whether eating hair, nails, skin flakes, urine or faeces (which present their own safety and health issues) plays to your specific cannibal kink is another matter.

In Conclusion

Curiosity about cannibalism is a multi-faceted and complex phenomenon. It combines our historical intrigue, psychological fascination, media influence, and even evolutionary biology. As humans, we are naturally drawn to explore the darker sides of our nature, and the sexy cannibalism kink provides an opportunity to ‘devour forbidden fruit‘.
