Whether you’ve landed on this page looking for sound advice on how to use an anal douche safely, or you’re after a juicy story about someone going about it in all the sensationally wrong ways, welcome.

I recently realised that over my seventeen years as a sex writer, I’ve written anal hygiene accessory reviews, but(t) I’ve never written a step-by-step process of anal douching. So here’s the article I’d want to read if I was looking for a real person’s perspective of anal douching; how you’re supposed to do it, how they actually do it (if different from the official advice), and why people anally douche at all. No painfully dry anal sex advice write-up here. You’ll get all the facts, tips and safe anal douching advice, but in addition, I reveal how I use my anal douche. And, spoiler, it’s in ways you’re really not supposed to. Definitely don’t try it at home. Do as I say as a sex educator, not as I do in the confessional part.

What is an anal douche?

An anal douche is either a refillable bulb or water-fed device with a nozzle to be inserted into the rectum. The water is squeezed into your butt, flushing out waste residue and leaving you fresh, empty, and clean.

The process of using an anal douche takes some practice, and is obviously best done in an appropriate environment, usually over a toilet or finished up in the shower.

Anal douches run from basic and cheap, to more involved and costly, depending on what you’re after and how much experience you have. Some are simple squeeze bulb and nozzle affairs, meant for fast internal swish and cleansing. Others have a variety of nozzles for anal stimulation and pleasure during the cleansing process, and may attach directly to the water supply, either via tap or shower head attachment. You can even find rechargeable motorised anal douches which spray and rotate in a variety of settings, with minimal manual effort. Just fill, insert and enjoy.

The main types of anal douche

Bulb douche: A soft, squeezable bulb with a short nozzle. Simple, cheap, and probably the most common type for basic anal rinsing.

Travel/compact douche: Essentially a smaller bulb or collapsible version designed for portability.

Shower hose attachment: Connects to a shower hose and provides a continuous flow of water. More powerful, so requires more care with water pressure and temperature.

Bag/enema-style douche: A water bag with tubing and a nozzle, allowing a larger volume of water and more controlled flow. Generally used for deeper rinsing rather than a quick clean.

Why do people use an anal douche?

The main three complaints about anal sex or anal play with toys are that it’s painful, it’s smelly, and it’s messy. Whose big idea was it to make the waste exit pipe feel so fucking amazing, anyway?

I’ve written elsewhere about easing discomfort during anal sex or when using anal sex toys, so if this is an issue for you, please read my helpful tips.

We’re left with the issues of smell and mess. That’s where anal douches come in and help out. They are specially designed devices which flush any residual mess from your anal canal not cleared during your last visit to the loo, thereby minimising mess and smell during anal play so you can fully enjoy, worry-free.

Who shouldn’t anally douche?

People who shouldn’t anally douche include anyone who is:

  • bleeding or experiencing pain anally, whether that’s externally and around the anus or inside the rectum.
  • suffering from anal-related health conditions or infections, such as proctitis or rectal inflammation, bowel disease, painful or bleeding haemorrhoids, or fissures.
  • recovering from recent anal, rectal or bowel surgery, unless cleared by your medical professional.
  • at increased risk of bleeding or tissue injury. For example, those with bleeding disorders or taking anticoagulant medication.

What about pregnant people? Pregnancy alone doesn’t rule out a gentle, low-volume anal rinsing, but you should avoid forceful or high-volume douching. If you have any concerns, it’s best to check with your health visitor, midwife or GP.

How to use an anal douche: step-by-step process

Ready for the official and safe step-by-step process of how to anally douche? Good. Here’s the safe and correct way to use an anal douche. How I strongly recommend you go about douching yourself anally, the sensible sex educator version.

Timing is important. Don’t do it right before anal sex, as you’ll need enough time to make sure any residual butt water has come out and for your anal area to calm down so you avoid cramps. I’d say do it at least an hour or two before the anal play session. Don’t rush it. It’s also best if you can time it for after your bowel movement, so the anal cleansing process is most effective. Kinda ruins the purpose if you clean yourself out only to shit immediately afterwards.

Use tepid plain water. And only water. Nothing too hot, too cold, or with anything mixed in, such as soaps or other irritants. Test the temperature on your wrist before inserting the anal douche nozzle anally. Too hot will damage your anal lining, too cold may trigger internal cramps.

It’s anal-related, so you know what that means: lube up. Lube the nozzle with a water-based lube. Yes, water will wash away the lube during the douching process, but its purpose here is just to help ease the nozzle inside yourself. If you use oil-based or silicone lubes, you could lose your grip on the anal douche and drop it in the loo, or injure yourself falling due to a slippery surface. Find out more about anal-specific lubricants in my anal lubes guide.

Choose a safe and stable position for douching. You’ll need to have sure footing for this process, so make sure you’ve something nearby to hold on to for support if necessary, and have both feet flat on the floor. Hover over/sit on the toilet, or squat in the shower. Whatever works without you losing your balance, getting leg cramps or backache, or flooding the bathroom with shitty water is the right one for you.

Be gentle and slow. Insert the nozzle carefully, without forcing or rushing. It only needs to go in a couple of inches; you’re not competing for any depth awards here. Squeeze the filled bulb steadily, rather than blasting the water in. If you get cramps or pain, stop immediately.

Hold the water as best you can, for around 15 to 30 seconds if possible. Then expel, ideally into the toilet but a bucket or shower if needs must.

Repeat that part of the process until the water runs clear. Two or three rounds usually does it. If it’s taking much more than that, you may be douching when an earlier bowel movement wasn’t complete.

The first step bears repeating here: wait before any anal play. Give it at least half an hour before any anally penetrative activity. Ideally, an hour or two (I know, frustrating!). Any residual water inside you needs somewhere to go, and “onto your partner or your bedsheets during sex” isn’t ideal. I make sure I don’t have anywhere I need to be in the hour or two after anal douching, and I wear underwear so any emerging dampness is caught safely and discreetly.

What not to do: common anal douching mistakes

When you get into the swing of anal douching, the temptation to make common mistakes is strong. Believe me, I’ve done, and still do, plenty of these.

When it comes to anal douching, don’t:

Douche every day. Daily anal douching disrupts your natural flora, weakens the natural waste expulsion process, and you can become dependent on rinsing in order to have a normal bowel movement. Scary, huh. I know it feels good but keep it to 2-3 times a week, max.

Blast through several litres of water. Regular high-volume anal rinsing can affect your electrolyte balance. Small amounts now and again are fine.

Add anything to the water. This includes but isn’t limited to: soap, bubble bath, shower gel, salt, vinegar, coffee, essential oils, or anything at all. They’re all bad for your anal lining, all irritating in the short term and potentially inflammatory in the longer term. You can’t see me right now but I’m blushing writing that as I’m a raging hypocrite. Find out why in my confession later in this piece.

Rinse so hard you’re basically giving yourself a colonic. If you’re pushing water up past the rectum area into the colon, you’ve gone further than you need.

Douche then fuck immediately. You might think you’ve expelled all the water, but I’m here to tell you: you haven’t. I often think there can’t possibly be anything else in there, then lo and behold ten minutes later there’s telltale (clean) dampness. Every last drop of water needs time to leave, I’m afraid. You can either allow that time, or accept the butt-water consequences during whatever anal activity you’ve got planned. Get more back door play preparation tips in my guide to pain-free anal sex.

In summary: avoid forceful insertion, excessive pressure, extreme water temperatures, irritating soaps or chemicals, and frequent or high-volume douching.

Why I use an anal douche

Why do I use an anal douche? Because I love to feel completely clean before and during anal play, because it makes me feel more confident and comfortable during anal sex, and because I find the process of anally douching itself extremely pleasurable and arousing. It isn’t because I feel I have to or should, or because my partner tells me to, and not out of some obsessive compulsion to have a clinically clean behind.

As a bonus, anally douching before using butt plugs and other anal sex toys means that those toys are much easier to clean after play. I’m sure I don’t need to go into further detail on that score.

If I didn’t anally douche, I wouldn’t feel as comfortable inviting my partner to rim and fuck my arse. I’d be worried about any mess and smell. To be blunt, I can’t bear the thought of him getting my shit on his cock, fingers, or tongue. Embarrassing. YKINMK of course. That scenario just doesn’t do it for me/us.

In addition, if I didn’t anally douche, and had waste still inside me when I use butt plugs or have anal sex, it would affect the physical sensations I experience during play. I wouldn’t get the full impact of the toy or his cock inside my arse, because other stuff would be inside me as well, stuff that is ideally expelled before using that part of my body for sexual pleasure.

Anal douching is a mental as well as physical clear-out process. One that has psychological as well as practical benefits. Not to mention the pleasurable aspects of douching in its own right. It’s really hard to remember not to anally douche every single day or every single time I have a shower.

In case you’re wondering what anal douche I have, mine is a curved hose, multi-spray style with fillable bulb, very similar to the Nexus Douche Pro available here at UberKinky.

There are loads of other styles to choose from. Shop anal douches at my recommended stores below.

Shameful confession time: How I anally douche

First off: do not try any of this at home. Or anywhere else, for that matter.

I do all the things you shouldn’t do. OK, I don’t ignore every line on the douching don’ts list I shared earlier, but I certainly don’t follow my own very sensible anal douching advice.

Two bottles of Original Source Mint & Tea Tree Shower Gel on a bathroom shelf, with the edges of two Lush bath products visibleMy favourite addition to the water when anally douching (wait, it gets worse) is Original Source mint shower gel. You know, the shower gel that gets reviewed about how extremely tingly and intense it is. On the outside of the body. That one.

In fairness (to me, at least), I never suffered any extreme sensation or unpleasant tingling when using this shower gel on the outside of my body. Not even on my most sensitive regions. My husband, on the other hand, stays well away from it. The shower gel, I mean.

I add a few drops to the water in the bulb of my anal douche and use that to add an intense but not (for me) intolerable or unpleasant level of tingling spice inside. I know I’m not supposed to. Do I want you to follow my example? Absolutely not. Am I going to stop doing it? Same answer.

Think menthol in those clitoral arousal gels and orgasm cream products. It ignites a cold blast sensation in the skin, similar to taking a deep breath in on a frosty winter’s day. I’ve just extended the tingling cold sensation from clit and nipples to inside my arse.
*sigh*
I guess that doesn’t make it any better. You’re not supposed to do it, but I can’t seem to stop.

I do use tepid water. However, after the initial couple of swirls, I empty that out and refill the bulb with properly cold water. Not just cool; cold. As cold as it gets, straight from the tap. As you can probably imagine, the sensation of cold water shooting inside my most private space is quite the shock. One I absolutely love. It’s like being gripped by the throat in the throes of passion, but from the inside.

I have a thing about sex + cold anyway; hence all my writing about sexy temperature play and sexual pleasure with ice. For example, using ice cubes during sex and masturbation, my very popular sexy ice cube maker review, and whether you should use ice anally.

The physical shock combined with the illicit and taboo nature of using ice is a kink I’m hooked on, and have been ever since I got freaky with a Mini Milk ice lolly in my late teens. But that’s another story for another day.

Cara's hand holds a sizeable anal probe against a white door. It's a black, beaded Titus Anal Probe with a finger loop at the base. What else? I rinse and repeat way more times than strictly necessary. I love the sensations it induces that much. I use the anal douche nozzle as an anal toy, slipping it in and out of myself, fucking myself with it anally – and I’ve come close to giving myself an anal orgasm in the process. I’ll make sure I have an actual, bigger anal toy on hand because anal douching always gets me hot to be fucked in the ass right then, right there.

My current favourite toy for an immediate post-douche anal fucking is the Titus Anal Probe which my husband bought for me from UberKinky, and which (apparently) didn’t look as large in the product pic as it actually is in real life. But now I’m actually glad it’s so hefty, and I can currently take 7 of its 9 delicious inches. Its bulbous max girth is 4 inches.

There’s no getting round it, none of the stuff I’ve confessed to above is safe or recommended. I could give myself internal shocks and cramps from the cold water, irritation and pain from the addition of tingly shower gel, friction and chafing from the immediate arse fucking with a larger toy. I file it all under RACK (Risk Aware Consensual Kink, another kink safety framework like SSC and PRICK), and activity that I take full responsibility for if I do damage to myself at any time. Things that I’m begging you not to do, and to be entirely honest, things I regularly promise myself I’m not going to do anymore, but the slut voice telling me to go on, do it again, you love it drowns it out every single time.

Who’s a bad little sex educator in need of stern discipline and harsh punishment? Oh, I think it might be me. Let me just quickly douche first. Oh god…

Anal douching FAQ

Do I have to douche before anal sex?

No. Douching is a preference, not a requirement, and plenty of very active anal sex lives happen without a bulb ever coming out of a drawer. If your diet is fibre-heavy, you’re properly hydrated, and you’ve had a bowel movement earlier that day, a good shower will get you where you need to be. Douche if you want the extra reassurance, skip it if you don’t.

How often is it safe to douche?

Occasionally, as needed for play. Not daily, not multiple times a day, not as part of your general hygiene routine. Once or twice a week at the upper end is fine for most healthy adults. Anything more frequent than that starts disrupting the natural balance of your rectal flora and can make your body dependent on rinsing for normal bowel movements.

Can I use plain tap water?

Small volumes, occasional use, most healthy adults will be fine on tap water. If you douche often, live somewhere with hard or heavily treated water, or have any medical reason to be careful with electrolyte balance, switch to filtered or distilled water at body temperature. Never salt the water. Never soften it with anything. Plain is the point.

How do I know when I’m properly clean?

When the water you expel runs clear on two or three consecutive rounds. That’s the whole indicator. You do not need to keep going until it’s crystal, sparkling, or hospital-grade. That’s how you end up over-rinsing and cramping. Clear, or nearly clear, is finished. Stop, wait, get on with the play.

Does anal douching protect against STIs?

No, and this is one of the more dangerous myths in the douching conversation. Rinsing your rectum does nothing to prevent transmission of HIV, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, or any other STI. Worse: frequent douching can slightly increase transmission risk by irritating and thinning the rectal lining, which is exactly the tissue barrier you want intact. Douche for cleanliness and peace of mind. Use barriers and get tested for STI protection. Two separate jobs.

Can I add tingly minty shower gel to my anal douche water?

No. Categorically not. It’s a detergent, it’s an irritant, it will inflame tissue that’s already delicate, and if you do it anyway you are on your own with the consequences. If you would like to know exactly how not on your own you are in doing it anyway, please refer to my confession section above, which I stand by for myself, but strongly advise you not to replicate.

Final Thoughts

There are obvious benefits to anal douching, plus positive aspects which only become clear once you introduce a douche to your sex hygiene routine.

My advice is to start with an affordable and easy to use bulb-style douche, then see how that feels for you and how easy it is to use over the loo or squatting in the shower. From there, you may decide to stick with that, or add different shaped, sensual fun attachments, or switch to a shower-hose style or longer, flexible tube style, depending on what you want to achieve from the douching or during post-douche sexy fun.

Douching anally keeps you clean, confident when using anal toys or during anal sex, and it feels sensational too. Just be aware of the sensible safety advice and the definite don’ts I’ve shared in this feature, and whatever you do, don’t follow the example of this self-confessed anal slut.
