The sex machine market has shifted considerably since I first published this guide. New brands have entered, several older products have been discontinued, and the quality standard across motorised sex toys has risen. Whether you’re researching a ride-on machine, a full thrusting machine, an automatic thrusting dildo, or a handheld thrusting toy that sits somewhere between a vibrator and a proper machine, this guide covers them all.

If you’re new to this corner of the sex toy world, here’s the short version. Sex machines are powerful motorised devices designed to provide sexual stimulation through thrusting, vibrating, rotating or riding. They do things that hands, standard vibrators and sex partners simply can’t replicate with the same deliciously relentless consistency. That’s why their appeal remains strong.

The two main draws are intense power and the sensation of being fucked. Mains-powered machines have motors to match their size, and they don’t get tired. For solo play, partnered play, watching or being watched, every gender and anatomy: there is something here for you.

I’ve personally reviewed three of the machines in this guide. Regular guest reviewer Tigerlily has covered the HiSmith range, The Handy series and the Sinloli, and other sections draw on trusted community reviewers where noted.

Cara’s Picks: Where to Start

If you want a clear steer rather than a 4,000-word read, here’s how I’d guide most people:

  • Best ride-on under £200: VVD Rider Desire. The only quiet motorised option in this guide, and the only one I can use without alerting the entire household.
  • Best ride-on overall: MotorBunny. Sybian-style power, app control, half the Sybian’s price.
  • Best thrusting machine for most people: HiSmith Premium or Wildolo. £600-700 bracket, both rated 10/10 by Tigerlily, both built to last.
  • Best thrusting machine on a budget: Sinloli Premium Ukulele at £279.95. Yes, you give up some power and stroke depth, but it punches well above its price.
  • Best for penis owners: The Handy 2 Pro. The benchmark automatic masturbator, full stop.
  • Best handheld alternative to a full machine: Velvet Thruster Frankie. If noise, space or budget rule out a full machine, this is the closest you’ll get.
  • If money is no object: Sybian for the iconic ride-on experience, or the HiSmith Servok for premium thrusting with adjustable depth.

A note on scoring: 10/10 doesn’t mean a £200 machine matches a £1,500 one. Scores reflect how well each machine delivers on what it sets out to be at its price point. The VVD Rider Desire and the Sybian are both excellent at very different jobs.

Types of Sex Machines

Not everything called a sex machine looks or works the same way, so here’s a quick breakdown before we get into specifics.

Ride-on machines: You sit or kneel on the device and stimulation comes from below via vibration and/or a rotating or thrusting attachment. The Sybian is the most famous example.

Thrusting machines: A motorised arm thrusts a dildo toward you and you position yourself however works best for your anatomy. HiSmith and the F-Machine Gigolo fall into this category, and the versatility makes them accessible for all genders and orientations.

Handheld thrusting toys: Smaller devices you hold during use that bridge the gap between a standard vibrator and a full sex machine. The Velvet Thruster sits here.

Automatic masturbators: Designed for penis users, providing automated stroking via a motorised sleeve. The Handy is the current gold standard in this category.

What to Look For Before You Buy

Noise

I cannot stress this enough: full-size mains-powered sex machines are loud. Floor-vibrating, neighbour-alerting, explaining-yourself-at-the-door loud, and this was as true in 2019 as it is now. If you share a home with other people, have children nearby or live in a flat with thin walls, factor this in before you spend several hundred pounds on something you can only use when the house is empty.

Attachment Materials

Always check what the included attachments are made from, because many machines come with TPE or TPR as standard, and these materials are porous, harder to clean thoroughly and not body-safe in the same way silicone is. Look for silicone wherever possible, and if the machine uses a standard attachment system such as Vac-U-Lock or HiSmith’s KlicLok, you can upgrade to better quality insertables separately. My sex toy materials guide covers the differences in detail if you want to read further.

Power Source

Mains-powered machines are more powerful and consistent, while rechargeable or battery-powered options are quieter and more portable but generally weaker in motor strength. For a properly machine-like experience, mains power is what you want.

Attachment Compatibility

Check whether you can use third-party dildos with a machine before you buy it. A machine locked into its own proprietary attachments, especially if those are TPE, is far more limiting than one that accepts industry-standard connectors, and you will likely want to upgrade to silicone options at some point.

Duty Cycle and Motor Cool-Down

Sex machine motors, particularly on lower-end models, can overheat during extended sessions. Higher-quality machines manage heat better, but as a general rule give the motor a rest if it starts feeling hot to the touch, and follow any session length guidance in the manual. A burned-out motor turns a £500 machine into an expensive ornament very quickly.

Price

Sex machines are an investment, and the very cheap options tend to disappoint on build quality, materials and motor durability. You don’t have to spend £1,500, but below around £200 you are generally looking at components that will show their limitations quickly.

Ride-On, Sit-On & Grinding Sex Machines

The Sybian Sex Machine

Sybian sex machine shown with included attachments, paperwork and accessories laid out on a red surface during unboxing

The Sybian is arguably the most famous sex machine in the world, thanks to its extensive presence in porn and its notorious use on the Howard Stern show. Clips of people riding it to explosive orgasm built an international fascination that has never really gone away, and it remains the machine most people think of first when the subject comes up.

I’ll be honest about my own experience with it: the 22lb beast was a little overwhelming once it was out of the box, and it takes real practice to get the most from it. Even after weeks of use I was not entirely convinced I had the positioning quite right. It felt good, but was not as immediately effective for me personally as the Doxy Wand vibrator, which is a strange thing to say about a machine that costs several times more.

What the Sybian absolutely delivers on is power. And noise. It is remarkably, almost impressively loud; floor-shaking, wall-trembling, “is that a jet taking off in the next room?” loud. Living with family in the house meant that despite finally having my Sybian dream come true, I could barely use it a quarter as often as I would have liked.

If you live alone or with a fully enthusiastic partner, have solid walls and a cooperative floor, the Sybian could be outstanding. If your living situation resembles mine, manage your expectations about how often you will actually get to use it.

The Sybian retails at around £1,500.

Sybian vs MotorBunny: Which Should You Buy?

If you can stretch to either, the MotorBunny wins on value and motor strength, and adds app control as standard. The Sybian wins on heritage, build quality and the cultural cachet of owning the machine everyone has heard of. The MotorBunny is louder; the Sybian is heavier. For most buyers in 2026, the MotorBunny is the more sensible purchase. The Sybian is the one you buy because it’s the Sybian.

The MotorBunny Sex Machine

MotorBunny ride-on sex machine with mounting block accessory, remote control and instruction sheet

The MotorBunny is the most direct Sybian competitor on the market. It looks nearly identical in style and operation, comes with a compatible range of attachments, and adds app control as standard. Where it outdoes the Sybian is motor strength; where it falls short is noise, because it is somehow even louder.

Community reviewer JoannesReviews tested it for me and was characteristically unambiguous:

“Let’s just say it can make me squirt just as easily as a Sybian, which is a very good thing. I squirted for the first time in my life on a Sybian and it’s good to know that the MotorBunny has that effect on me too. I can edge myself on the lower settings but once you ramp things up it just forces an orgasm out of you. These orgasms are felt throughout your lower body and it isn’t uncommon to be left unable to walk with jelly legs.”

The MotorBunny is considerably cheaper than the Sybian at around US$899 for the basic model.

The Tremor Sex Machine

The Tremor ride-on sex machine in white and red with branded packaging and wired remote control

The Tremor is another Sybian-style ride-on machine, and despite the similarities in concept it has its own distinct character. Its rounded triangular cross shape makes it more comfortable to sit astride than the half-barrel design of both the Sybian and MotorBunny, which is a real practical improvement for longer sessions. The finish is high quality, with silicone attachments included as standard, putting it ahead of machines that cut corners on materials.

JoannesReviews put it through its paces and reported back:

“Straddling it and slowly turning up the power you can feel waves of pleasure pulsing through your lower regions. Incredible sensations that emanate from the machine but penetrate right through your body turning your legs to jelly. It always amazes me when I close my eyes and I listen to the noises coming out of me when I ride it. It is a beast, almost primal in its ability to stalk your orgasm before chasing it down and utterly blowing you away. Riding The Tremor is not just getting off, it is embarking on a journey to orgasm-ville on the non-stop express train, travelling first class of course.”

The Cowgirl Premium Sex Machine

The Cowgirl Premium sex machine in black with wired remote, smartphone showing the companion app, and silicone attachment

The Cowgirl has grown considerably in profile since this guide was first written and is now one of the most talked-about ride-on sex machines available. Created by certified sex educator Alicia Sinclair, it delivers 1,200RPM of vibration via body-safe silicone attachments and can be operated by wired remote or wirelessly via the app. The use of silicone as standard is a meaningful point in its favour against ride-on competitors that still ship with TPE.

It sits in a similar pricing bracket to the Sybian, so it’s a serious investment rather than a starter purchase. A full hands-on review is in the works; in the meantime, check current pricing at the links below.

VVD Rider Desire Sex Saddle

VVD Rider Desire pink sex saddle with silicone dildo attachment and wireless remote control

The VVD Rider Desire earns its place in this guide for one reason above all others: it is quiet. At a maximum of 60dB, it is the first sex machine I have been able to use with other people in the house completely unaware. Everything else in the ride-on category will rattle your floor and alarm your neighbours. This one won’t.

It is also rechargeable rather than mains-powered, which gives it a very different character to the Sybian, MotorBunny and Tremor. You sit on it saddle-style, your body weight contributing to the stimulation. The curved base allows for natural rocking motions during use, and it supports up to 125kg. Three body-safe silicone dildo attachments are included, each distinctly different, swapping in and out via magnetic fittings. A clitoral tapping stimulator runs alongside the dildo function, and a wireless remote handles the controls. It weighs less than 2kg.

My experience with it has been completely unambiguous. As I wrote in my review: I would have preferred to communicate my thoughts via a series of orgasmic grunts and moans, but apparently a written review is required. It turns my legs to jelly every single time. It earns its perfect score of 10/10.

If noise has been the one thing standing between you and a ride-on sex machine, this is the one to look at first.

Priced at US$239 (approximately £190).

Thrusting Sex Machines

Ride-On vs Thrusting: Which Type Is Right for You?

Ride-on machines deliver intense vibration through external contact and are primarily designed for vulva owners who want clitoral and broader genital stimulation. Thrusting machines deliver penetrative sensation via a motorised arm and a dildo, and work for all genders and anatomies, including anal use. If you want the sensation of being fucked, you want a thrusting machine. If you want overwhelming external vibration that feels nothing like a partner, you want a ride-on. Many enthusiasts eventually own both for different moods.

The F-Machine Gigolo

F-Machine Gigolo thrusting sex machine on its black stand with internal blue LED lighting

The F-Machine Gigolo is a completely different type of machine to the ride-on styles above. Rather than sitting on it, you position yourself against a motorised thrusting arm to which you attach a compatible dildo, making it usable face up or face down, vaginally or anally, by people of all genders. The attachment method is a vacuum plug compatible with the Doc Johnson Vac-U-Lock range, and I’d recommend buying a good quality silicone Vac-U-Lock dildo separately rather than relying on the included TPR one.

Assembly is refreshingly straightforward: main motorised unit, stand, thrusting rod, dildo, remote control, power lead. With plenty of lube the F-Machine Gigolo felt, very straightforwardly, like being fucked by a machine; relentless, consistent, completely tireless. The remote keeps you in charge of speed and intensity throughout. Loud, as you’d expect from a mains-powered machine of this size.

At around €698 it is significantly more affordable than the Sybian, and the penetrative thrusting format makes it versatile across orientations and anatomies.

Score: 9/10

HiSmith Sex Machines

HiSmith have built a serious reputation as the standout brand for thrusting sex machines that deliver real performance without the most eye-watering price tags. My reviewer Tigerlily has put four of their machines through thorough testing, with scores ranging from 8 to a perfect 10. All HiSmith machines use their KlicLok quick-release attachment system, which makes swapping between insertables fast and secure and is a significant practical improvement over older vacuum-style connectors.

HiSmith Wildolo Sex Machine

Score: 10/10

The HiSmith Wildolo earned top marks from Tigerlily: a premium, app-controlled thrusting machine with the KlicLok system, solid build quality and performance that makes the investment feel entirely justified. Read the full HiSmith Wildolo sex machine review.

HiSmith Premium Sex Machine

Another 10 out of 10. App-controlled, powerful and consistently impressive throughout testing, and for performance relative to price Tigerlily rated this one of the most compelling machines currently on the market. Read the full HiSmith Premium sex machine review.

HiSmith Servok

HiSmith Servok thrusting sex machine with adjustable depth control, shown in use

Score: 9/10

The Servok adds adjustable depth control and handles larger insertables exceptionally well, making it the best HiSmith option if precise penetration depth matters to you or you want to use bigger toys. App-controlled and powerful throughout. Read the full HiSmith Servok review.

HiSmith Pro Traveler

HiSmith Pro Traveler portable thrusting sex machine with purple silicone dildo attachment, mounted via suction cup

Score: 8/10

The portable entry point to the HiSmith range. Tigerlily reviewed the original Pro Traveler and awarded it 8/10. Since that review was published, HiSmith have updated the range with the Pro Traveler 2 at £199 and the Pro Traveler 3.0 at £249, so you now have two compact options to choose from at this end of the range. Which HiSmith Should You Buy?

Four HiSmith machines, four price points, and the differences matter:

  • Pro Traveler 2 (£199) or 3.0 (£249): the entry point. Compact, portable, lighter on power. Buy this if budget or storage is the deciding factor.
  • HiSmith Premium (~£599): the sensible default. App control, strong motor, KlicLok system, no major compromises.
  • HiSmith Wildolo (~£699): a step up in finish and refinement. Buy this if you want the Premium’s capabilities with a bit more polish.
  • HiSmith Servok (£1,799): the specialist. Adjustable depth control, handles larger insertables. Buy this if precise depth or big toys matter to you, otherwise the Premium does the job for a third of the price.

Sinloli Premium Ukulele Sex Machine

Sinloli Premium Ukulele thrusting sex machine shown side-on against purple lit backdrop, budget alternative to HiSmith machines

Score: 9/10 | Reviewed by Tigerlily

Sinloli is a sister brand to HiSmith, and the Premium Ukulele is their answer to the question of what you get when you apply the same thinking to a much lower price point. At £279.95 it is roughly half the price of the HiSmith Premium, and yes, some things have been scaled back: the motor is 48W versus HiSmith’s 100W, the maximum stroke depth is 3.5 inches rather than 5.9, and there is no app control. But at under £300, none of that is unreasonable, and none of it is a dealbreaker for most users.

The independently adjustable legs allow the machine to angle up to 30 degrees upward or 20 degrees down, which is useful for dialling in the right position. It uses an XLR connector system with a KlicLok adaptor included in the box, so HiSmith accessory owners aren’t locked out.

Tigerlily concluded: “For the money, the Sinloli Ukelele is the absolute best-in-class. It’s powerful enough for anal, comes with a selection of accessories, and offers a little variety from the wireless remote control. Great for the price, but think carefully if you can afford to spend more.”

Lovense are best known for their app-controlled interactive toys, and they also produce two thrusting sex machines that bring the same long-distance connectivity their other products are famous for. Both machines are compatible with Vac-U-Lock dildos and support the Lovense app, including synchronisation for interactive and long-distance partner use.

Lovense Mini Sex Machine

Lovense Mini thrusting sex machine, the compact and more portable version with app control and Vac-U-Lock compatibility

A compact, more portable option that keeps the app connectivity and Vac-U-Lock compatibility of its larger sibling at a lower price point, making it a solid choice if space or budget is more of a consideration. RRP £319.

Handheld Thrusting Toys & Thrusting Vibrators

Not everyone has the space, budget or noise tolerance for a full sex machine, and handheld thrusting toys are a legitimate middle ground, particularly if you want the thrusting sensation without committing to a full machine setup.

Velvet Thruster

Selection of Velvet Thruster silicone tops in pink, blue, red, brown and other colours, showing the range of compatible attachments

Score: 9/10 (Frankie variant)

The Velvet Thruster is a premium handheld thrusting toy made from body-safe silicone that delivers real thrusting motion rather than vibration alone. It is rechargeable and considerably quieter than any of the full-size machines in this guide, which makes it a practical option for anyone who wants the thrusting experience without the noise or the price tag of a full machine. The range includes several variants priced between £195 and £210; I reviewed the Frankie, and it scored 9/10.

Automatic Masturbators

The Handy and The Handy 2 Pro

The Handy 2 Pro automatic masturbator with digital display and touch controls, shown in use

Automatic masturbators sit alongside sex machines as a related category and deserve a place in any comprehensive guide. The Handy has become the benchmark product in this category, with Tigerlily awarding both the original and the updated Handy 2 Pro a perfect 10 out of 10.

Designed for penis users, The Handy uses a motorised sleeve to provide automated stroking with variable speed and stroke length. It connects to interactive content and can be controlled remotely, which makes it a strong choice for long-distance couples as well as solo use, and the Handy 2 Pro refines an already excellent product with improvements to power, control and build quality throughout. The original The Handy is priced at €189.60 (approximately £161). A mid-range option, The Handy 2, sits at €223.20 (approximately £190), and the Handy 2 Pro is €356.04 (approximately £303).

Sex Glider / Monkey Rocker

Monkey Rocker self-powered sex glider with curved seat and manual rocking mechanism, no motor required

Self-powered sex machines are a different proposition entirely, and the best known is the Monkey Rocker. Rather than a motor doing the work, you sit on the machine and your own rocking motion drives the dildo. No motor, no noise, no mains power required, which makes it an appealing option if noise is your primary concern with full-size machines.

The original Monkey Rocker has been difficult to source reliably in recent years, though similar options exist from various retailers. I’ve included it in this buyer’s guide because it remains a famous self-propelled sex machine that generates a lot of excitement in pleasure seekers, as well as providing ongoing inspiration in the fucking machine industry.

Look for one compatible with Vac-U-Lock dildos so you can use body-safe silicone insertables; Tantus make excellent silicone dildos with suction cup bases that are compatible with Vac-U-Lock connectors, and Lovense also produce Vac-U-Lock compatible dildos designed specifically for use with sex machines.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sex Machines

Are sex machines safe to use?

Yes, when used sensibly. The main considerations are materials (avoid porous TPE or TPR attachments where possible, and opt for silicone), lubrication (always use plenty, and stick to water-based lube with silicone attachments), and not pushing beyond comfortable limits on speed or depth. Read the manual for your specific machine and, as with any sex toy, if something feels wrong during use then stop.

How loud are sex machines?

Loud. Very loud, in most cases. Full-size mains-powered machines are not quiet devices, and noise is the single most important practical consideration for people who don’t live alone. If you share your home, have nearby neighbours or thin walls, factor this in before you spend several hundred pounds on something you can only use when the house is empty. The main exceptions are self-powered options like the Monkey Rocker, and the VVD Rider Desire saddle, which at just 60dB is the quietest motorised machine in this guide and the first I have been able to use with other people in the house completely unaware.

Can men use sex machines?

Yes. Thrusting machines are fully usable for anal penetration and work well for people of all genders and anatomies. Automatic masturbators like The Handy are designed specifically for penis users. The ride-on machines in this guide (Sybian, MotorBunny, Tremor, Cowgirl) are primarily designed for vulva owners, but thrusting machines and automatic masturbators serve everyone equally well.

Can you use a sex machine with a partner?

Absolutely, and many people find that partnered use is where these machines really come into their own. Thrusting machines free both hands for other things, ride-on machines work brilliantly for watching or being watched, and app-controlled machines (HiSmith, Lovense, Cowgirl, MotorBunny) allow a partner to take control from across the room or across the world. Long-distance couples in particular often get more out of a connected machine than any other category of sex toy.

Are sex machines worth the money?

For most people, yes, with caveats. If you live in a situation where you can actually use one regularly without noise being an issue, a good sex machine delivers experiences that human anatomy and standard vibrators can’t replicate. If you live somewhere noise is going to limit you to occasional use when the house is empty, think carefully about whether the spend justifies the access. The VVD Rider Desire at around £190 has changed the value equation considerably; you no longer need to commit to £600+ to get a properly good machine experience.

Can I use my own dildos with a sex machine?

It depends on the machine. Many machines use standard connector systems such as Vac-U-Lock, which accepts a wide range of compatible dildos from brands like Tantus, or HiSmith’s KlicLok system. If a machine uses a proprietary attachment system, your options are limited to whatever the manufacturer provides. Always check attachment compatibility before buying, particularly if using body-safe silicone dildos matters to you.

Do I need lube with a sex machine?

Yes, always. More than you think you need, and then a bit more on top of that. A machine doesn’t slow down, check in or adjust instinctively the way a person does, so keeping things comfortable is entirely your responsibility. Water-based lubricant is the safest choice across all materials and attachment types.

Are sex machines suitable for people with limited mobility or disabilities?

For many disabled users, sex machines can be transformative. Hands-free, adjustable, tireless and remote-controllable, they remove physical barriers that traditional sex toys and partnered sex can present. Thrusting machines with sturdy bases (HiSmith, F-Machine Gigolo) can be set up at a comfortable angle and left in position. Ride-on machines like the Sybian and Tremor require getting on and off, which may not suit everyone, but the VVD Rider Desire is lightweight at under 2kg and easier to position. App-controlled machines are particularly valuable for users with limited dexterity, as the controls are managed via phone rather than physical remotes or buttons. As with any sex toy purchase, the specifics of your mobility, anatomy and living setup will determine which option fits best.

What is the difference between a sex machine and a thrusting vibrator?

Size, power and intensity, mostly. A full sex machine has a motor built for sustained, powerful use over extended periods. A handheld thrusting vibrator is quieter, lighter and far more portable, but the sensation is less intense and less consistent. If you want the thrusting experience on a budget or need something discreet, a thrusting vibrator is a good starting point. If you want the full machine experience, you need a machine.

How do I clean a sex machine?

Clean the attachment separately from the machine body. Most silicone attachments can be washed with warm water and a toy cleaner or mild soap. Don’t submerge the machine itself in water. Wipe down the motor body and external surfaces with a damp cloth. Let attachments dry fully before storing, and keep them separate from the machine.

How do you store a sex machine discreetly?

Realistically, you don’t, not entirely. Full-size machines are large, heavy and not subtle. Most people store them in a wardrobe, under a bed, or in a dedicated storage case. Some manufacturers (HiSmith, Lovense) offer carry cases or covers as accessories. The Pro Traveler range is the most genuinely portable option if storage is a key concern. Handheld toys like the Velvet Thruster, automatic masturbators like The Handy, and the VVD Rider Desire saddle are all considerably easier to store discreetly than any full-size mains-powered machine.

What kind of warranty should I expect?

Warranty terms vary considerably by brand. The Sybian comes with a one-year limited warranty. HiSmith machines typically come with a one-year warranty. Lovense offers one year on most products. The Handy comes with a two-year warranty, which is among the strongest in the category. Always check the specific terms with the retailer at the point of purchase, particularly for machines bought through third-party sellers, where warranty handling can be more complicated than buying direct from the manufacturer.

How much should I spend on a sex machine?

For a proper machine-quality experience, budget at least £300 to £400. Below that you are likely looking at weaker motors, lower build quality, or materials that cut corners on body safety. At the top end, the Sybian at around £1,500 represents the premium tier. The HiSmith range offers a strong balance of performance and price in the £400 to £700 bracket, which is where I would point most people starting out. The notable exception to all of this is the VVD Rider Desire at around £190, which delivers a genuinely impressive experience in a category where most machines cost three to eight times as much.
