You can tell a lot about a sex toy by where it lives in someone’s home. Put back in the box? No good at all. At the bottom of the wardrobe? A sometimes toy. Under the bed or in the bedside drawer? Getting warmer. On the floor by the bed, possibly still unwashed from the last hurried use? Bingo. The We-Vibe Tango bullet vibrator earned the floor-by-the-bed spot in my home a long time ago, and over the years it earned the same status with two of my Pleasure Panel reviewers too. This is the merged review of all three of our takes on it.

Quick note on which Tango this is: this review covers the original We-Vibe Tango bullet vibrator. We-Vibe has since released the We-Vibe Tango X as the current model, with a redesigned grip, three-button controls, a travel lock and an updated motor. If you’re choosing today, the Tango X is almost certainly the one you want. Read my We-Vibe Tango X review for the full rundown. The review below remains as a record of the original model that built the Tango name.

My Review of the Original We-Vibe Tango

The day before the We-Vibe rep handed me a Salsa bullet at Eroticon 2014, I was in Hella Rude’s house listening to her extolling the many virtues of one, plugged in charging by her bedside. Don’t ask what I was doing in her bedroom, while she was in her underwear. Ok you can, but that’s a topic for another post, on another day.

That original Salsa I was sent turned out to have a fault meaning it sometimes wouldn’t switch on no matter how charged it was. The We-Vibe rep was apologetic, and offered to upgrade me to the brand new We-Vibe Tango. The Tango arrived a couple of days later, the new and improved successor to the Salsa, and it became one of my most-reached-for vibrators for years afterwards.

Packaging and what’s in the box

The Tango comes in a clean, rectangular lidded box with the We-Vibe logo on the front. Inside, the bullet sits in a firm foam insert. You get:

  • The Tango bullet vibrator itself
  • A generously sized white satin drawstring storage pouch (big enough to also hold the charging lead)
  • A multilingual instruction booklet
  • Product registration card
  • USB charging lead with the magnetic connector clip

The storage pouch is a nice touch. Since the Tango isn’t silicone, it doesn’t strictly need protecting from other toys in the same way that a silicone toy would, but the pouch stops it knocking around against other things in your toy drawer. I kept mine in the original box for years, with everything together.

Charging the Tango

This is the one part of the original Tango that everyone seems to have an opinion on. The magnetic USB charger clips onto two small metal nodes on the base of the bullet. When it’s seated correctly, a small yellow LED on the lead lights up. When it’s fully charged, the light goes out.

In my experience, the magnetic connection is fiddly. You have to set the bullet down somewhere it can’t roll, line up the connector carefully, and back away slowly. Knock the bullet at all and the nodes misalign and charging stops. The manual claims 90 minutes of charge gives up to 2 hours of playtime; I’ve found it more like an overnight charge for around an hour of use. That’s the only reason this isn’t a 10 out of 10 for me. (You’ll see below that my two Pleasure Panel reviewers had different experiences with the charger, so your mileage may vary.)

A small tip from years of use: if you have nails, press the power button with a nail rather than the flat of your finger. Pressing with your fingertip flat tends to mash against the metal charging nodes either side of the button at the same time, which isn’t ideal.

Functions and settings

The Tango has a single button on the base and cycles through eight modes:

  1. Constant low
  2. Constant medium
  3. Constant high
  4. Constant highest
  5. Pulse
  6. Wave / oscillating
  7. Fast pulse
  8. Dash-dash-dot-dot-dot pulse

Press and hold to turn off. There’s no travel lock, which is a real omission. The Tango X added one, and it’s one of the most genuinely useful upgrades on the newer model.

How it feels in use

I’ll be honest. This is a bloody powerful vibrator.

If you’re a power queen like me, you’ll love the Tango. It caresses my clit with an almost silent jack-hammering. A jack-hammering which has me muting my squeals into a pillow or easing orgasmic cries into whimpers as I press it between my legs during a quickie climax stood in the bathroom, or even a guilty-but-so-good release at my desk.

What makes the Tango remarkable isn’t only the power; it’s that it manages this much power while staying genuinely quiet. There’s no rattle of an angry-wasp-like motor in cheap plastic. The vibrations are rumbly and thuddy rather than buzzy, and the sound is more of a low hum than a recognisable vibrator noise. You can use it in a shared house without the whole building hearing you.

Because it’s a bullet, it works on far more than just the clit. I’ve used mine over nipples, inner thighs, labia, and on a partner’s shaft, balls and perineum. The lipstick-shaped tip gives you the choice of a flat surface for broad sensation or a more precise edge for pinpoint work. The flat fascia is what makes the Tango more versatile in use than the older Salsa, which was fully tapered.

It also slips comfortably between bodies during couples sex, and the smooth shape makes it a surprisingly fitting addition tucked between rope knots in Shibari bondage if that’s your thing.

Because the Tango is waterproof, it’ll join you in the bath or shower. Because it’s plastic and not silicone, you can use any lube with it: water-based, silicone, hybrid, whatever you prefer.

What it isn’t for

The Tango is not an anal toy. It has no flared base and is small enough to be a genuine retrieval risk. Please do not use it anally. It’s also not designed for G-spot insertion. It’s small, very smooth, and gets very slippery with lube; even if you can hold onto it inside the vagina, the angle isn’t right for proper G-spot work. There are far better toys for both jobs.

My verdict

The original Tango earned its permanent spot next to my Doxy Wand and iGino One as a sex toy I keep charged up and ready to thrill. The lipstick tip is more versatile than people give it credit for, the power is genuinely startling for the size, and it’s quiet enough that nobody else needs to know what’s going on. Would have been a 10 out of 10, but I knock a point off for the fiddly charging connection.

My score: 9 out of 10.

About the contributed reviews below

The two reviews below were written by volunteer reviewers through Pleasure Panel, my community reviewer programme which ran until 2019. Pleasure Panel connected volunteer reviewers with top sex toy brands to produce honest, user-led reviews, with the aim of helping people find what actually suited them rather than only what was popular. The programme has been closed for several years but the archive of contributed reviews remains a useful resource, and I’m including these two here because between them they cover use cases I don’t (a quieter, less power-focused approach in one, and using the Tango for anorgasmia in the other).

Score: 9 out of 10

The We-Vibe Tango Bullet Vibrator is honestly a power punch! It comes in a classy, sleek and pretty box, with a charging cable, a white satin storage bag and a little manual. Everything is clean, simple and modern. I started by doing the initial charge and right away I noticed how fiddly the magnetic charger thing was. I had to move the cables around a bit to get the charging light back on track, which was annoying because the charging becomes a task, where I have to be home and see that it is charging.

Holy WOW. I switched the vibrator on from the bottom button and it almost startled me. I was honestly surprised how strong even the lightest vibrations were. I thought it was on its strongest when I first put it on, but nope, it was on its lowest power. I had heard it was one of the most powerful bullet-style vibrators, but I was still very positively surprised at how something so small could vibrate through my whole hand. It made me smile and giddy to get to the practical testing.

And the quietness. Huge applause and a ton of hugs and kisses to We-Vibe for creating a strong but quiet motor. It’s like a dream come true and sets the bar very high for all other vibrators in the world. It is quiet enough that you can’t hear it through a duvet and definitely not through a closed door or with music or TV on. Even if somebody does hear something, it doesn’t sound like a vibrator. The sound is very low and humming, not at all buzzy.

I tested through all the settings. The strongest steady speed vibration was so strong it was hard to push the button to change it. It was so powerful that if I put it in an empty glass I think it could shatter it. Power queens, here is a bullet made in the heavens for you.

I personally am not a power queen, so I use my Tango on top of my labia. This way the vibrations carry to my clit through some padding. After warming up I can use it on settings 1 and 2 next to my clit (preferably the slanted tip or the body of the vibrator). The vibrations are very rumbly and thuddy. They penetrate through into my inner clitoris. I also like the whole bullet stimulating my entire vulva. I place the bullet between my labia and move it around, which takes away the pinpoint stimulation that can be too intense for some.

I also love using my Tango on my nipples and other erogenous zones. I had fun testing it on my nose (I sneezed). When I placed it on my lips, blood rushed there and they plumped up and felt tingly. Watch out for your teeth though, that can hurt.

I like to use my Tango for quickies, or when I’m tired and don’t have the energy to “do the work.” The Tango will deliver to my needs. It’s a great cornerstone vibe: discreet, classy, well-made, with strong vibrations that will serve many women and probably even men. If you’re sensitive, you can use it around your vulva, through clothing, or use the handle. If you crave serious power, the Tango has you covered.

The only downside is the fiddly charging magnets. Everything else has been great. It’s easy to clean because it’s waterproof, just use water and soap, and easy to use with one button. No travel lock, but the button isn’t easy to press accidentally, so no problem.

Score: 10 out of 10

I’ll be honest, I’m in love with the We-Vibe Tango Bullet and very unashamed of it. It sits on my bed almost all the time because that’s how frequently I reach for it. I’ve owned it for a few months now and have finally decided to pen a review because, well, so many others out there already sing its praise. If you’re still somehow undecided on whether this is the vibrator for you, allow me to try to convince you either way.

The mundane but important bits

This is a bullet vibrator, so it’s very small. The Tango is 3.5 inches in length with a circumference of 2.3 inches. I’d caution against using this near the anal area: it might feel good around the perineum, but avoid actual anal play. A trip to the Emergency Department would be hardly enjoyable. It’s shaped like a lipstick with “We Vibe Tango” detailed at the base but still very discreet in design. If you have nosy housemates or like bringing a vibrator on your travels, this would be a prudent choice. The drawback is the lack of a travel lock, so the only way to be sure it won’t accidentally turn on is to drain it completely.

It does have a low battery light that flashes when it needs charging, which I find helpful. It’s made of ABS plastic so it’s body-safe and rigid. The material allows for very good transmission of vibrations from the motor, and combined with the angled tip it allows for wonderful pinpoint stimulation wherever you choose. The magnetic charger means it’s waterproof, which spells convenience when cleaning, and it can be used in the shower.

First impressions

The box this comes in is gorgeous, and I’ve kept mine purely because of that. It comes with a satin drawstring bag which I’ve found is large enough to store both the Tango and the charger. This is great for a weekend away, or just to be sure you’ve got the right charger for the right toy.

I’ve read other reviews mention the magnetic charger being somewhat finicky. I personally have not had any trouble with this. The magnet seems sufficiently strong, and I can leave it to charge on my bed without worrying that it’s not actually connected. The charger has a USB plug which I’ve found very versatile. I can charge it via my laptop or attach the magnetic clip head to my Android phone’s charger. The vibrator itself is beautifully designed. Mine is in a shade of pink that’s pleasing to me (and I usually dislike the colour), but it’s also available in blue.

During use

On to the fun part. This is incredibly, impossibly powerful. I bought this because I struggle with orgasms and had read about the strength in this tiny thing, but I was unprepared. I turned it on (at the lowest setting) in my hands and it threatened to jump right out of my palm. It’s so strong that some days I use it through clothes first, including through jeans, before placing it directly on me. For all its strength, it’s also very quiet. This was important to me as I share a flat. With my door closed, I cannot hear it from outside my bedroom or in the room next to mine. I’m confident using it with flatmates around, although managing the sounds I make is a different matter.

It has 4 speed settings (Low, Medium, High, Ultra) and 4 patterns (Tease, Wave, Pulse, Cha-cha), and you cycle through them by pressing the button at the base. To turn it off, hold the button for a couple of seconds. It also has a memory function so the next time you turn it on, it starts at the setting you last left it at. I usually appreciate that, although at times I’ve found myself switching it on to Ultra and having to cycle through to the lowest speed. This leads to my only real gripe: 4 speeds and 4 patterns, operated by a single button. Sometimes I appreciate the simplicity, but mostly I wish We-Vibe had just designed this with plus and minus buttons. (Editor’s note: they did, on the Tango X.)

But all is forgiven when I actually use it. I’ve never experienced anything quite like it. The vibrations are strong and deliciously rumbly, going deep into the tissues. The intensity of the rumbles creeps up on me and before I know it I’m caught up in incredible vibrations pulsing through me. I also really enjoy the Wave pattern in the build-up. It’s often touted for its pinpoint stimulation, which is true, but I personally tend to lay the entire body of the Tango on my vulva for a more diffuse sensation.

Being small and sleek, the Tango is perfectly shaped for partner use. It fits comfortably between two people, and those who like strong vibrations on a penis might enjoy this too. It can also be inserted vaginally, although it’s not designed specifically for G-spot stimulation, and because it’s small, smooth and gets slippery with lube, keeping a hold of it can be challenging. I personally haven’t had problems holding on, alone or with a partner. Also worth noting: because it’s small and the vibrations are so strong, some vibration does travel up into the hand, although I haven’t found this numbing.

Summary

I love the Tango. I truly believe many could benefit from trying it, whether you’re new to sex toys or have been amassing a collection. I don’t believe certain vibrators should be kept for beginners and some for those more experienced. I bought this when I was first exploring sex toys, and it has now spoiled me. I’d only caution against this if you know you like gentle or broader vibrations, because the Tango does not hold back. We-Vibe markets this as the most powerful mini-vibe, and I wholeheartedly agree. If you crave power and deep rumbly pinpoint vibrations, you have found the One. Let this vibrator adorn your toy box.
