Did you know you can easily and confidentially self-test for HIV at home? Knowing your HIV status is one of the most important steps you can take for your health. Yet, more than 1 in 7 people living with HIV worldwide are unaware they have the virus. In higher-income countries, around 20–30% of people with HIV remain undiagnosed, while in resource-limited settings, this figure can rise above 60%. Without knowing their status, many individuals continue to transmit the virus unknowingly.
Why Self-Test for HIV at Home?
Here in the UK, an estimated 4,700 people were unaware of their HIV-positive status as of 2022, contributing significantly to new infections. Worryingly, 34.5% of those diagnosed that year received their diagnosis late – after treatment should have already begun. A late diagnosis can seriously impact long-term health and life expectancy. But the good news is that testing has never been easier. You can now self-test for HIV at home, privately and conveniently, without needing to visit a clinic.
How HIV is Transmitted
HIV is found in bodily fluids such as blood, semen, and breast milk but not in sweat or urine. The most common way of contracting HIV is through unprotected anal or vaginal sex, accounting for over 95% of cases. Other transmission routes include:
- Sharing contaminated needles or syringes.
- Parent-to-child transmission during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding.
- Unprotected oral sex (though the risk is low, estimated at 1 in 5,000).
Introducing the INSTI HIV Self-Test
To demonstrate how easy it is to self-test for HIV at home, I used the INSTI HIV Self-Test developed by bioLytical Laboratories. This test was created in response to research showing that (at the time of research and development for the test) over 103,000 people in the UK were living with HIV, with around 18,100 unaware of their status.
That’s right: this isn’t just an informative article, I took the test myself – and I’m sharing the full process with you. Later in this feature you can watch a video of my own self-test to show just how easy and hassle-free it is.
How Does the INSTI HIV Self-Test Work?
The INSTI HIV Self-Test provides results in just minutes after a simple finger prick and a small blood sample. Unlike other home HIV tests that make you wait 15–20 minutes or lab-based tests that take days or weeks, this test delivers instant, over 99% accurate results.
The kit also includes a resource card with further HIV information and support options.
What’s Inside the INSTI HIV Self-Test Kit?
When opening the box, you’ll find:
- An instruction booklet with step-by-step guidance.
- A membrane unit (where results appear).
- A lancet, pipette, and plaster for blood collection.
- Three small bottles: diluent, colour developer, and clarifying solution.
- A discreet disposal bag for easy clean-up.
How to Prepare for the Test
Before starting:
- Read the instruction leaflet carefully.
- Ensure you have good lighting and a steady surface.
- Wash and dry your hands.
- Keep tissues or wipes nearby in case of excess bleeding.
Step-by-Step Guide to Self-Testing for HIV
1. Collecting Your Blood Sample
- Use the lancet to prick your fingertip. You won’t see a needle—it clicks and makes a tiny cut.
- Gently massage your finger to encourage blood flow.
- Use the pipette to collect blood up to the black line.
- Squeeze the blood into Bottle 1, recap, and shake four times.
2. Activating the Test
- Pour Bottle 1 into the membrane unit well and wait for absorption.
- Shake and pour Bottle 2 (blue cap), wait for absorption.
- Pour Bottle 3 (do not shake), wait for absorption.
3. Reading Your Results
- One blue dot under “C” = Negative (No HIV detected).
- Two blue dots = Positive (Confirm with a doctor immediately).
- No dots or incorrect pattern = Invalid test, repeat with a new kit.
After the Test
- Dispose of all materials in the discreet disposal bag.
- If you test positive, seek medical confirmation and advice on treatment.
- If negative, remember that regular testing is essential for ongoing health.
