The creative and ingenious beavers (they love being called beavers) at Rocks Off HQ were stupendously lovely enough to send me their sparkling, brand new Rocks Off BodyStar Massager to try out and then rant or rave loudly about it on the internet.

I didn’t really know what to expect from a sex toy that resembles a plastic starfish. Could be merely a flashy (or fishy, even) gimmick. However, I do love their bullet style vibrators such as the enormously popular RO-80mm bullet vibe and the RO-G G-Spot vibrator. So I thought I’d give it a whirl.
It’s actually labelled a ‘massager’. Yeah, right. We all know where you’d like us to massage ourselves with this star shaped creation. I’ll massage myself into oblivion, I thought to myself. Well, hoped.
The Rocks Off BodyStar Massager (*ahem* vibrator) has a white ABS (plastic) convex front area, with a powder pink colour PU coated, flat back. The front has a ridge leading to the centre from each point of the ‘star’, presumably for better grip during use. In the centre is the power button, surrounded by a chrome colour collar, which has the raised lettering of ‘5X’ upon it. I was hoping this meant the BodyStar has five functions and wasn’t some kind of weird secret message.
You can clearly see the BodyStar vibrator through the packaging when you first receive it. It comes in one of those rigid plastic boxes with inner plastic housing to keep it prettily in place during retail and transit. The box is easy to open, no risk of slicing your fingers off (you’ll be needing those later) trying to wrestle your new product from the box.
Turning the BodyStar over and looking at the back, each point of the star shape on the flat pink reverse has a scattering of large and small raised nodules. Not only does this help the smooth product not to fall out of your hand and clatter to the floor (uber important point), they also add some friction during use against your skin. The centre of this reverse area is slightly convex so you do have a smooth raised circle to use if the nodules aren’t your thing.
How is it powered? Well, the Rocks Off BodyStar Massager has a handy instruction area which helps you to discover this very fact. On the pink flat back of the product you will see the words open/close on the edge, with an arrow pointing both ways separating the words. A black mark in the centre of the BodyStar’s edge lines up with a pink mark on the front of the BodyStar.
Twist ever so slightly, keeping each half of the BodyStar connected. The points of the star will move so they are alternated each side. You can then lift off the pink flat reverse of the toy, to reveal the battery housing within.
You will need two AAA batteries to power this sex toy. They are placed in the central battery area and a small diagram in the battery casing shows you how to insert. There is a handy pink ribbon to help you remove the batteries. Ensure you leave some of the ribbon sticking out so you don’t get the batteries stuck within!
Put the pink flat side of the BodyStar back together with the white half. You can use the black and pink guide marks to help you line up. Twist together and hey presto! The device is locked together once more and ready for use. Simple.
Holding the Rocks Off BodyStar Massager in your hand, the pink flat side should be against your body and the white convex area facing out. This gives you easy and direct access to the central power button.
I will be honest and say I didn’t hold out much hope and was dreading this BodyStar being a flop. What can a plastic toy for less than £30 really hope to achieve on my vibration veteran’s body?
Rocks Off have surprised me yet again. The vibrations are of the shrill, bullet vibrator style, which I just love for clitoral stimulation. The shape of the BodyStar also makes it perfect for nipple stimulation, whether you use the noduled star tips for a quick, intense experience or the smooth centre for a more spread out, pulsating sensation.
Unfortunately, it is not the quietest sex toy (especially on the third, omgImgoingtoscream vibration setting), so if discretion is what you’re after, living with paper thin walls and your parents in the next room, this probably isn’t for you.
Unless, you know. You wave your vibrators in the air like you just don’t care.
The 5 settings (yes! There are five) are as follows, described in my usual articulate and professional fashion:
- Low (hello, wake up to pleasure)
- Medium (I’m really not messing around now)
- High (omgImgonnascream)
- Cha-Cha (steamy steam engine huffalongachoochoo!)
- Low-Med-High-repeat (ooh you teasing bastard)
My favourites are 3 (obviously, power queen, duh) and the cha cha/choo choo option is great as well. Like the best vibrating oral sex tongue tip for your clit. To turn it off, you do need to press and hold the centre button for a few seconds. Upon start up once again, you are back at the first setting.
A major plus point is that the Rocks Off BodyStar Massager is fully waterproof, so despite the noise factor you can take it with you for a ‘special’ bath alone or shared (while everyone’s out ), or use it in the shower where the water will help drown out (see what I did there) the unfortunate decibel levels.
The more I used this toy, the more I liked it. I went from low hopes, to unconvinced, to having a new (I must admit, bathroom only – no, I don’t live with my parents) friend in the space of two or three uses. The star points are amazing when used clitorally and the star shape means the powerful vibrations are not focused in your fingertips like with a bullet vibrator, they are spread nicely through your palm from the plastic. No more vibration white finger to deal with as well as the jelly legs.
If you are looking for a quiet and discreet sex toy to use anytime, anywhere, this is going to be rather noisy for you. If you are after an actual massager that will soothe the aching knots from your muscles, try a massage wand.
However, for a superb (non-phallic) splash-time sensation that you can leave on the bathroom shelf, the Rocks Off BodyStar Massager will appeal. It’s also retailing for under £30 (£29.99) and can be found at various online sex shops.
Points for power and design, but some must be lost for the noise level and choice of material. I would have preferred silicone… but I guess that would push up the price. Use with water-based lubricants for a pleasurable, effortless glide.
