Sunny weather got you hot and bothered? It’s difficult to muster the energy to do anything when the temperature rises. If only there was a way to still enjoy sizzling sex and masturbation during a heatwave, without melting into a distinctly unsexy, sticky mess. In this feature I’ll be revealing how to cool down hot summer sex with some tried & tested techniques, so you can still enjoy intense intimacy whatever the weather.

How To Cool Down Hot Summer Sex

Why We Are Hornier In Hot Sunny Weather

Wondering why you’re still feeling that sensual tingle despite feeling too hot to even move? There’s a scientific explanation for a spike in our libido during sunny and warm weather.

How To Cool Down Hot Summer Sex“Summer sunshine promotes extra release of serotonin and dopamine,” psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall said to Metro.co.uk.
“These are two of the most energising and positive neurochemicals in the human brain.

“For a healthy sex drive both of these chemicals need to be present in decent amounts, together with some giggles and being relaxed.”

In addition, sunlight helps boost the body’s production of vitamin D. As a result, some people have a boost to their production of oestrogen and testosterone – directly contributing to that high summer sunshine libido.

How To Cool Down Before Sex

The best way to experience the coolest sex possible during a heatwave is to cool both yourself and your chosen room down before you start any sexy shenanigans. Unfortunately, this preparation puts paid to any spontaneous hook-ups – but planning for cooler sex during sweltering weather is worth the lack of spontaneity.

The type of mattress you sleep on can make a big difference to your body temperature and how warm you feel at night. Why do foam mattresses get hot? Click through to discover the answers, as well as plenty of great advice on sleeping cooler and more comfortably all year round.

How To Cool Down Hot Summer Sex

Here are my top tips for cooling your room, and yourselves, before getting up close and personal:

  • use a fan in your bedroom during a heatwaveDuring the day, keep the curtains closed to keep the room as cool as possible despite the summer sun.
  • Invest in a room fan – we like to use a tower fan with remote control & timer options, but any is better than none – to help cool the room down further. Find yours on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk.
  • Eat lighter meals. Eating large or heavy meals will raise your body temperature, as well as increase any discomfort during sex.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink enough water to help replenish the fluids lost through sweating in hot weather, and to prevent dehydration which can have a serious negative effect on your physical performance during sex, as well as other medical issues.
  • Pop your gel ice packs in the freezer so they’re ready to use after sex or for fast cool-down whenever you need.
  • Store a pack of wet wipes in the fridge for pleasantly cool wipes during or after sex. Keep the pack upside down so that the top one is always the wettest. I do this with my make-up removal wipes too!
  • If you don’t have any wet wipes, or prefer not to use them, keep a jug of water in the fridge. You can then pour this into a bowl and use with fabric cloths in place of wipes.
  • Get yourself as cool, clean and fresh as possible. Having a thorough cool shower and using deodorant will not only lower your body temperature, it will undoubtedly make you more attractive to your sex partner.

Keeping Cool During Sex

You’ve prepared yourself and your room of choice for a cool sexual liaison despite the high temperatures. Are there any ways you can keep your room and body temperature as low as possible during sex itself, to maximise comfort and keep the focus on enjoying shared sensuality?

Here are my suggestions for keeping cool during sex (or solo pleasure during masturbation):

  • Use ice cubes for a welcome burst of cold along with something new, erotic and exciting. Don’t use ice cubes on sensitive areas direct from the freezer, no-one wants ice burn, least of all in those places! Pop an ice cube in your mouth and perform a trailing lips and tongue tease over your partner’s erogenous zones, or include during oral sex.
  • Embrace the lazy fuck. Don’t put too much effort in, just go with the flow and allow things to happen, rather than going for sexual Olympics gold. Take your time and enjoy the slower pace, as well as mindfully enjoying the blast of cool air from your room fan every so often.
  • Heard the tip about putting your sheets in the freezer before making the bed? So have I… and ugh, it just seems like so much effort! Instead, why not try having sex in other, cooler rooms? The kitchen for example… or under cool jets of water in the shower.
  • While on the subject of sex elsewhere than the bedroom: do you dare take it outside? You’ll need to make sure you won’t get discovered and into any trouble. Perhaps a pop-up tent in the garden, or in your car if you have air conditioning and it’s parked somewhere with enough privacy.
  • Don’t actually touch each other. You don’t have to study up and become tantric sex experts; just watch each other masturbate and discover the hotness of voyeuristic summer sex in a cooler, more comfortable way.

Refreshing Cool-Down Tips For After Sex

You’ve had a fantastic sex session, as cool as you could possibly make it during hot summer weather. Sex is usually an incredibly close and intense skin-on-skin activity. There’s the rush of heightened libidos and highly active, frenetic passion.  The very nature of the sexual act is completely non-conducive to staying cool – despite all your best planning attempts.

As it is highly likely you’ll be a hot, sticky mess after your amazing sex session, here are my top recommended ways to cool down & refresh yourselves after sex:

  • Use those cool wipes from the fridge (or cold water and cloths, alternately) for a fast clean-up and refresh.
  • Jump into a gloriously cool shower, whether alone or together with your partner.
  • Grab a bottle of water from the fridge and keep it by the bed for through-the-night hydration top-ups.
  • If you’ve delighted in cool summer sex elsewhere than the bedroom, you can then enjoy the relief of getting into/on top of cool, fresh bed sheets.
  • Make sure your bedroom fan is angled to cover you both during the night, which should also help you drift off to beautifully cool slumber. If your fan has a timer function make sure you use it, so that you can slip into blissful sleep without energy consumption or related worries.

Alternatively…

You could just not have sex.

How To Cool Down Hot Summer SexI know, I know, but hear me out. There’s absolutely nothing to say you should have sex all year round, or put pressure on yourself to do it when you’re really not in the mood.

If you don’t fancy sex or other skin-to-skin intimacy (seriously, who wants to spoon in a heatwave?), then don’t do it. Wait until cooler weather, or a day when you perhaps have more energy to expend on the above preparations, if your libido genuinely won’t quit.

There are other ways to retain the intimacy and sensuality in your relationship than simply sex. Rediscover the early days thrills of sexting – just text, or photos too if you choose. Relieve your pent-up horniness by masturbating with your favourite sex toy – and, if you would like to include your partner, invite them to watch. I can’t guarantee that will ease their urgently throbbing desires, though!

Proper Preparation = Passionate Performance

I hope the suggestions in this feature have provided inspiration for cooler & more comfortable sex during hot weather and heatwaves. It’s all about proper preparation – which, as James Baker famously said, prevents poor performance. Or in this case, prevents your roaringly high libido melting to a damp squib through sweaty, uncomfortable and grumpy sexscapades.

Wishing you all the beautifully cool sex of your dreams this summer!
