I had never used a toy cleaner before; my girlfriend and I are fluid-bonded, and soap and water suffice to clean most toys. Nonetheless, I have realised that a toy cleaner is a useful thing to have on hand.

The Pjur Toy Clean Intense Sex Toy Cleaner Spray comes in a simple white and blue bottle. Except for the fact that it has “Toy Clean” written on it in a rather big font, it is pretty unassuming. It’s not really subtle enough to keep it on your bathroom shelf if you live with judgy roommates or family, but it looks anything but sleazy. The bottle comes wrapped in tight plastic; I like that for sex toys, since it’s a guarantee of hygiene, but for a toy cleaner it seems a bit like unnecessary packaging.
On the back of the bottle, you can find instructions for use in several languages as well as a list of ingredients. This cleaner was formulated specifically for sensitive skin and tested dermatologically, but for any people (like me) who have a tendency to get allergic reactions to products for sensitive skin, I’ll include the ingredients here.
Aqua (Water), Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Propylene Glycol, Bis-PEG/PPG-14/14 Dimethicone, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, and Dimethicone.
Speaking of sensitive skin: it might be worth noting that I sprayed my toys over my left leg, on which I have a huge scar from surgery, and the toy cleaner caused a tight feeling in my scar for a couple of minutes. It was nothing worrying, but if you have scarring near your genitals, you might want to take particular care rinsing the toy after spraying it.
Like I mentioned, sex toys can be cleaned really well with soap and water. Why buy a toy cleaner, then? Well, there are a few reasons.
Firstly, it might simply feel more hygienic, if you’re concerned about germs. The Pjur Toy Clean Intense Sex Toy Cleaner Spray isn’t advertised anywhere as being anti-bacterial, so I take that to mean it isn’t, but if you share toys with another person, it’s a step above soap. It’s not as hygienic as boiling toys, obviously, but for toys you can’t boil, it’s a good middle way. (Be careful to only share toys with people whose STD status you know; a toy cleaner won’t protect you against transmission.)
Secondly, one of the Pjur Toy Clean’s purposes is to control odours. As such, it might be a good way to clean butt toys: it will keep the “butt odour” at bay for longer than soap would. The Toy Clean itself doesn’t really have a smell – only a very, very faint one, right after spraying – but I noticed that it does indeed get rid of odours on toys. If you like toy cleaners with a fresh scent, this isn’t the one for you, but the absence of fragrances is a good thing for people who are sensitive to them.
Thirdly, it’s safer for sex toys than rubbing alcohol. Alcohol is, of course, anti-bacterial, but it can react badly with silicone or glass toys. This toy cleaner won’t, since it’s alcohol-free. It also won’t damage other materials, such as rubber, latex or leather, which is handy if you want to clean fetish clothing and accessories.
Lastly, the Pjur Toy Clean Intense Sex Toy Cleaner Spray is very useful if you live in a place where making a run to the bathroom to clean your toys might lead to awkward situations. You can just give your toys a few sprays, wipe them down, and stash them away without having to worry about whether they’re clean enough.
This sex toy cleaner is very easy to use. You simply take off the plastic cap covering the nozzle of the bottle and give your toy a few sprays. Be sure to cover it entirely – depending on the size of the toy this might take anywhere between two and five sprays. Let the toy cleaner rest for ten seconds to a minute, and then rinse it off. You can also just wipe it down, since it’s not supposed to irritate the skin, but I prefer to play it safe and rinse it off when I can.
I feel like the Pjur Toy Clean Intense Sex Toy Cleaner Spray is a useful addition to my sex toy collection, and I’d recommend it to anyone who thinks it could be of use to them based on the four reasons I listed above.
