Yes, you read that correctly. 50 Speeds of Play: Grey Steel. If there was ever a vibrator named for brilliant marketing purposes, this is it. Making the most of the Fifty Shades of Grey tidal wave is a brilliant move by Rocks Off sex toys! Packaging

The 50 Speeds of Play Grey Steel vibrator comes (unsurprisingly) in grey coloured packaging which has a silvery tone for a more luxurious, saleable appeal. As with the rest of their sex toys, the packaging is instantly recognisable as part of the Rocks Off sex toys collection. It came with a white glossy card sleeve over the main box which keeps the product discreet when being sold in bricks and mortar shops.

Removing this sleeve reveals the silvery grey box within which the Rocks Off 50 Speeds of Play Grey Steel Vibrator is housed. You can see the vibrator through window on the front. The back of the box provides more information about the vibrator inside, including the batteries required (included), amount of vibrating speeds, materials, place of manufacture and much more.

In The Box

Opening the top of the box, it’s an easy job to then pull out the internal plastic mould which has the vibrator sat inside it. There is a small Rocks Off Ltd catalogue enclosed although this doesn’t include details of the Rocks Off 50 Speeds of Play Grey Steel Vibrator. This is understandable as it’s a brand new addition to the Rocks Off collection. A small instruction leaflet for this particular vibrator would have been useful. Plus, although the vibrator is mainly plastic (so no silicone to silicone storage issues) it would have been nice to have a storage pouch for it.

Lube

As this is a plastic vibrator you can use any type of sex lubricant with it, although my preference is for water based lube but that’s a personal choice. I also like to use the least amount of lube when using this for clitoral stimulation as I find too much can dampen the vibrations for me. When using it internally (vaginally) this isn’t an issue. I just have a very demanding clit.

RO-160mm Bullet Vibrator

The Rocks Off 50 Speeds of Play Grey Steel Vibrator is quite obviously a re-branded Rocks Off RO-160mm bullet vibrator. That’s perfectly fine with me, as I got on well with the original RO-160 vibrator. Following the lead of the rest of the Rocks Off bullet vibrators there is a removable twist off cap which allows you to replace the batteries, and a soft press button on the very end to turn the vibrator on, off and to scroll through the various settings.

Powering Up

This Rocks Off 50 Speeds of Play Grey Steel Vibrator takes two AA batteries. These were included and I simply had to remove the internal paper disc and replace the twist off cap in order to operate the toy. The batteries were really quite difficult to remove. I found myself giving an aggressive ‘air hand job’ to try to get them free. Eventually they came out but really the fit is just slightly too tight for them.

Replacing the cap you will notice that there is a silicone ring between the main vibrator and the cap. This means that putting the cap back on forms a waterproof seal. Yep, this is a waterproof sex toy. This is a fab feature as it means that not only can you enjoy it in the bath or shower but you can also clean the vibrator thoroughly between uses.

Design

Aside from the soft press button on the end and the water sealant ring, the rest of the Rocks Off 50 Speeds of Play Grey Steel Vibrator is made with ABS plastic over the inner mechanism. This plastic has a highly polished look, with a silvery grey effect similar to gun metal.  The slight iridescence in the tone makes it look much more decadent and luxurious than, for example, a plain black or pink vibrator. There is an oval area embossed on the side of the vibrator which states that this is the RO-160mm and there is a small heart Rocks Off logo.

The gently pointed tip of this Rocks Off Grey Steel vibrator helps to specifically target the clitoris for clitoral stimulation but it’s also useful to direct the vibrations over any erogenous zone. Size wise, the vibrator measures 6.5 inches in overall length with an insertable length of 5 inches. The circumference of the shaft is just under 4 inches.

Settings

The main difference between the Grey Steel and the original RO-160 is that the Grey Steel has ’50 Speeds of Play’. That’s right, a whole fifty settings. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible for me to list them all here but I am fairly sure I would have to create adjectives that aren’t even in existence yet. Hopefully you can imagine the varying pulses, oscillations, ascending and descending vibrations as well as a choice constant vibration speeds. It’s a little sad that this is the main feature of this vibrator as I literally love everything else about it about from the fact it has 50 speeds.

Why? Well with only one button on the base it makes it very difficult to settle on and select just one of the overwhelming 50 settings. I found that I was wasting time just pressing the button again and again to try and find a vibration setting that suited me in any particular moment.

Operation

More importantly, having just the one button means that there isn’t a way to scroll forwards or back through the settings. It’s simply a case of press the button again and again to discover more and more speeds and patterns, all the way through the fifty – and if you accidentally find one you like but press again it’s too late. You have no choice but to cycle around the entire fifty again. I could have just tapped my clitoris that amount of times and I would have had an orgasm already.

In my opinion, fifty settings is simply too many to be any practical or pleasurable use on a vibrator. I can completely understand tagging on to the current globally dominant marketing that is Fifty Shades of Grey, but creating a vibrator with fifty vibration settings is a clear cut case of form over function. It’s a novelty designed to make the product saleable without any thought for the end user. I sincerely doubt that any man or woman who uses vibrating sex toys will ever really feel the full benefit of fifty different settings. If you did need a vibrator with fifty settings you’re either far too picky or in a very large polygamous household that can only afford one sex toy.

During Use

I don’t really spend too much time worrying about which exact setting I want with this vibrator, I just find one which seems powerful enough to get me off in the next 5-10 minutes and get on with it. The good news is that I can orgasm using the Rocks Off 50 Speeds of Play Grey Steel Vibrator – for me this is usually by using it as a clitoral stimulator as this is a far more effective route to orgasm for me than vaginal penetration.

Just in case you were one of those people who’d love fifty vibration settings to choose from, I’d change this vibrator slightly before wholeheartedly recommending it. Instead of just one button on the base there needs to be at least two buttons. One to scroll forwards through the settings and another one to go back. I do understand that this would mean that the Grey Steel doesn’t fall in line with the original RO-160 and several manufacturing and factory adjustments would no doubt need to be made.
