When Lovehoney launched their very own adult board game, I was immediately curious. How would this differ to the popular Monogamy game? Is it worth the price tag and the hype? How do you play it… and would my husband and I enjoy it? Welcome to my Lovehoney After Dark Board Game review. Let’s start at the beginning.
Packaging
The Lovehoney After Dark Board Game is shrink wrapped in plastic so you know the box has remained sealed since manufacture until it reaches your excited hands. The sturdy, light-gloss finish of the box has an attractive ombré blue-to-purple colour scheme, with the front displaying the After Dark name and the back of the box providing handy information about the game & contents.
What You Get
Inside the box you’ll find instructions on how to play, the game board, four wrapped packs of cards, four different coloured player markers and a die.
Game play for the Lovehoney After Dark Adult Board Game is blessedly simple. You each pick one of the player markers, start on the ‘Start’ square, then keep rolling the die to make it round the board in turn, until someone reaches the ‘Finish’ square and is the winner. Not sure how you’ll decide who goes first -whoever enjoyed the most recent orgasm, perhaps?
And as for a reward for the winner… well, I’m sure you’ll be able to conjure a suitable prize.
As you roll the die to make your way round the board, you’ll each land on various squares and you need to fulfil the action on them (some of them make you go right back to the start, so watch out!). Some invite you to pick a card from one of the four decks and do what it says on the card, or answer a question, or confess if you’ve ever done the thing or not.
By the way, when playing with friends as well, rather than just your partner, you can omit the use of the Talk Dirty cards as those actions are more explicit/maybe you’ll feel they’re best suited to just the two of you.
Or you might just decide to become exhibitionists for the night, or perhaps enjoy a moresome/orgy with friends. Whatever suits your situation really. As long as everyone’s comfortable, and I don’t just mean there’s plenty of lube to go round.
ANYWAY. What are the four packs of cards in the Lovehoney After Dark Adult Board Game all about? How do they differ and what do you have to do?
You Said What?
These are guilty secret confession cards. When you take one of these cards, you have to own up to whether you’ve ever done what it says on the card. These are sexual faux pas, and some of them are just ugh! (No, I’ve never blown my nose on the bedsheets! Yuk!)
Others are simply funny. There’s a great mix.
Kinky Confessions
When you take one of these cards, you need to truthfully answer the ‘would you rather’ scenario on the card. These are all ‘would you rather’ questions. If you really can’t/don’t want to answer, one of the cards is a list of forfeits so you can do one of those instead.
Oh, I Say!
These cards require the person who picked the card to either draw or act out whatever it says. As in, some of the cards say ‘draw xxx’, others say ‘act out xxx’. So make sure you’ve got pens and paper ready beforehand!
Talk Dirty
The Talk Dirty cards are the most risqué and raunchy of the four decks. They require you to engage physically with your partner (oral sex, striptease etc) or tell them something you might otherwise be too shy to say (a fantasy, roleplay or provocative statement).
There’s huge variety in the cards which will lead to a very different game each time, for a long time. As well as the four decks to pick from when you land on the corresponding board squares, there are various questions to answer, confessions and actions on various squares round the board.
Our After Dark Playtime
We had such a laugh playing the Lovehoney After Dark Adult Board Game. I must admit that playing a board game hasn’t been in our foreplay arsenal before now; gaming is usually on a Wednesday night, with friends, rolling D20s, hunting for treasure and trying to avoid having our characters’ heads caved in by mighty orcs and goblins.*
I’m not sure how our friends would react to us producing Lovehoney After Dark one week instead, but to be on the safe side my husband and I decided to keep this particular game to just the two of us.
The game very cleverly has a light-hearted vibe. Having a sense of humour is not only an attractive quality in general, it’s great for sex-related matters too. Having a laugh at the squares you land on, the cards you draw and the consequential actions means you’re both put at ease, and any requests from the cards/board squares will feel easier to complete –helping to lead you both to the game’s intention of a shared steamy scenario at the end (if you both last that long before pouncing amorously).
We personally found some of the questions/confessions very tame, but that’s definitely more a reflection of us rather than a negative trait of the game. Obviously the game needs to have general, mainstream appeal, and my husband and I are veteran kinksters who have not only been in a relationship for over a decade, but we have been in polyam relationships and work in the sex industry. Have I ever taken a sex toy to work? Well no, because there was a warehouse full of them when I got there. Would I rather be spanked or have my hair pulled? Hmmm, why isn’t both an option? 😉
The cards and the game in general is brilliant for opening up (or re-opening) discussions with your partner. Not just confessing long held fantasies, but revisiting actions and sexy chats which all too easily get relegated to those newbie couple days together, and which might not cross your mind as regularly after many years in a relationship.
We found that playing the Lovehoney After Dark Adult Board Game led to at least getting very amorous with each other (during daytime playing) and in the evening when we had time to fully relax and enjoy it was effortless to go from playing the game to foreplay & sex without it feeling forced or expected. It’s brilliant for getting you both in the same mindset and ‘in the mood’ – and a mood tailored to both of your personal preferences, likes/dislikes and specific desires.
I don’t want to give too many spoilers about what discussions and actions the game introduces during play, as it will ruin the surprise! You’ll just have to splash out on a game for yourselves** and enjoy the ride(s).
Summary
Lovehoney After Dark is such a fun game to play! I didn’t really know what to expect from it and wasn’t sure it would hold much fun or sexiness for us, as I felt like we’re a long term couple, with kids, who have ‘been around’ in the sex industry and kink worlds. You do get to a point where you feel nothing will feel wild or shocking ever again.
But then, After Dark isn’t all about being shocking or daring – although there are certainly elements which sizzle and entice. The light-hearted element is a stroke of genius, relieving any pressure and lifting the mood. This puts you both in prime position to relax and enjoy travelling round the board to the finish line, with the game making sexy chat and revelations about each other so extremely comfortable and easy all the way.
If anything feels too much, you can opt out with your pass card or do a forfeit (don’t worry, they’re not all scary/daring or raunchy; one of them is just to pour your partner a drink. See? Nothing to be scared of).
I’d strongly recommend the Lovehoney After Dark Adult Board Game to all couples no matter how long you’ve been together, how well you think you know each other or how sexually experienced you think you may be. With this game it’s effortlessly easy – and extremely fun! – to peel back the covers and dive right in… into chat, into engaging with each other, and into SEX.
