Thanks to the Cara Sutra Pleasure Panel, this month I had the chance to play with the Vibease Smart Remote Control Vibrator. It’s available for $119 from vibease.com.
What’s It Made Of, and How Big Is It?
Coming in standard body-safe silicone in either pink or purple, the Vibease Smart Remote Control Vibrator weighs and fits easily in the palm of your hand.
Describing the shape in text is difficult. It’s like a beach-worn smooth stone that’s been bent around a little, with a protruding volcano-like nodule on one end. This protrusion is designed to snuggle onto your clitoris.
The whole thing is small enough to sit in your underwear comfortably.
Vibease claims the device is “waterproof”, so you can take it into the shower, but actually it’s just splashproof, since you can’t submerge it in the bath due to the charging socket. It’s charged using a long 2.5mm pin that pushes through a hole in the silicone, terminating in a standard USB plug. Thoughtfully, Vibease have included both a long and short USB cable.
Also in the box you’ll find a little black drawstring storage bag.
Setting Up the Vibease Smart Remote Control Vibrator
To get started, download the Vibease Chat app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play. On first opening the app you’ll need to register an account using email or Facebook.
There are two buttons on the Vibease smart vibrator. Hold the left one briefly to turn it on, or hold for around 5 seconds to initiate Bluetooth pairing. The button on the right cycles through the 11 built-in vibration patterns, ignoring all the smart features. Although you probably bought this for the remote control and syncing features, the preset vibrations is less pointless than it sounds. You can actually customize the vibration patterns and store them as favourites, overwriting the built-in ones. The interface for doing this is like a basic drum machine, with each beat a different intensity.
Once you’re in the app, you can invite someone else to control your Vibease device, or switch to the remote control tab and simply hand your phone to your partner (or use it yourself).
After the initial pairing, turning on the device will automatically connect it. You can jump straight into a synced audio drama or remote control within seconds.
How Are the Vibes?
Controlling the vibration is done using a 2D graph, with one axis being the strength, and the other being the speed of the pulses. You don’t need to keep your finger on it–the vibrator will keep on at its current setting until you touch again. It’s a relatively simple system to understand but doesn’t allow for a huge amount of freedom or variation. Even on a slow and hard setting, the buzz just feels like a continuous wave, rather than pulsing between full strength than a complete stop.
The laws of physics sadly dictate that you can’t fit a large counterweight inside such a minuscule vibrator, so, the Vibease Smart Remote Control Vibrator is more on the side of buzzy than rumbly, and that’s partly responsible for the lack of variation. If you’re the type of person that needs penetratingly deep rumbly vibes to get off, you’ll be disappointed. Those with less stringent requirements will be suitably happy with the added features that this smart vibrator brings to their panties.
Gather Round: It’s Fantasy Time
Head over to the Fantasy Store tab to get started with synchronised vibes. A few sample soundscapes are included to get you going, but you can download some free erotica, as well as paid. You can sample the selection before even purchasing a Vibease smart vibrator, which I’d strongly suggest you do now to get an idea of whether you’ll enjoy them. Each story is around 10-30 minutes long, typically, but I’d class them more as “mini audio dramas” than audiobook stories. They’re audio porn, basically–or at least, all the ones I downloaded were.
The paid fantasies cost anywhere from 20-35 Vibease credits. Credits can be purchased in varying amounts from 10 for £0.99 to 85 for £5.99. Each paid audio drama therefore works out at around £2-£3.
To be honest, the audio porn style didn’t really appeal. It was more laugh out loud cheesy than panty wetting. If you’re also the sort of person who cringes when they hear things like “does my big hard dick make your pussy wet baby?”, I suspect you may feel the same. I’ll probably stick with the remote functionality.
DIY Audio Porn
Another interesting feature is the ability to record your own fantasies, either from a piece of music/audio on your phone (which means you could theoretically bring in your own audiobook erotica), or simply by recording your own voice. Once you’ve imported the file, or finished recording your voice, you’ll enter standard playback mode.
Here you choose to either automate the vibration syncing or control the action yourself from the remote control pad, which will then be recorded to the file. When you’re done, hit Save, and name your fantasy.
3 Hours of Fun Time
Using Bluetooth Low-Energy to communicate with your phone means it should be able to stay on, connected, but otherwise inactive, for a long time indeed. The actual active time, with vibration on, is what will use the battery up fastest. In average real-world use, you can expect around 3 hours of continuous vibration.
Could Someone Hack My Vibrator?
It’s an important question to ask with anything connected to the internet: what’s the worst that could happen if this device was hacked, and how likely is that? And do I accept the benefits this device gives me, in full knowledge of that risk?
There are two points at which your device could be hacked: the Bluetooth connection, and the internet remote control features.
Bluetooth itself is relatively secure. Once paired with your device, it can’t be hijacked unless you initiate the unpairing process first. Keeping your phone updated will mitigate any vulnerabilities with Bluetooth. Even then, the range is small. Anyone looking to pair with your device would need to be within around 10 meters line of sight. And even then, they’d need to specifically be targeting your vibrator in full knowledge that you were wearing one.
Then there’s the remote control feature, via the internet. Vulnerabilities in the Vibease system were discovered in late 2017. Following best practices, the company was informed and patches were issued before any real-world attacks were seen (within an hour, in fact, which demonstrates how seriously they took the issue and how committed they were to fixing it). I’m confident saying that it’s safe.
A secure invitation system allows only people you want to control your vibrator to actually have access. This is tied to a mobile app, so at that point, if your partner’s phone is stolen and their security also compromised, then clearly the thief will have access to all their apps. I would suggest that perhaps the banking app is more of a target than the remote control vibrator one. And of course, at any time, you can simply turn your device off.
So in theory, your Vibease vibrator could be hacked to give you an unwanted orgasm, if you were tied up, if your partner’s phone was stolen, if their security password was guessed, and if the hacker didn’t find anything more interesting on that phone. That’s a lot of “ifs”, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Some people will never trust anything that’s connected to the internet, and this isn’t the device for them.
Is This The Future?
There’s no doubt in my mind that there’s huge potential for toys that sync along with erotic fantasies and porn–particularly with VR now entering the mainstream. Unfortunately, I don’t think the Vibease is it. The audio porn just doesn’t do it for me, the vibes aren’t strong enough to penetrate deeply, and there’s not enough variation in the remote control.
But if you want a discreet vibrator that your partner can control with their phone from anywhere in the world–and don’t mind the somewhat buzzy vibrations–the Vibease Smart Remote Control Vibrator is perfect.
