The most ‘disturbing’ of the tales in The Mammoth Book Of Best New Erotica 13 is Anna Lidia Vega Serova’s refreshingly original ‘Cancer’. It takes the reader to a far darker place than most tales dare. Its strength lies in its honesty, being unafraid to explore the compulsion of a fetish, however repugnant. It is, quite simply, a masterpiece (translated by Lawrence Schimel).
There is poetry, raw and vital, in Remittance Girl’s ‘Atrocity Ballet’.
And there is exquisite mastery of words in Adrea Kore’s ‘Peek Hour’, where our protagonist is a ‘connoisseur of cock’ within the cocoon of public transport. What delight there is in discovering an author whose style is so very much her own. Ms. Kore writes with fluid, theatrical confidence. The anthology is worth its purchase price for her story alone.
Another triumph of The Mammoth Book Of Best New Erotica 13 is Kristina Lloyd’s ‘Bondage Pig’: an unusual antique exerts an unexplained power over the occupants of the household. Well-crafted and building tension artfully, the tale had me in genuine anticipation of where it was leading (and left me far from disappointed).
Raziel Moore’s ‘Invisible Lines’ is another highlight in the collection. Multi-layered, it inspires contemplation of the scars integral to our flesh: the lines that mark us, and how those wounds may be opened or closed by those whose paths cross our own.
Lucy Debussy’s ‘Marylou’ and Rachel Kramer Bussel’s ‘Subbing’ are unashamed fantasies, of letting the heat rise as we embrace desire.
Meanwhile, Kay Jaybee’s whimsical chronicle of lust is told from the point of view of a discarded mattress.
Here is something for every taste: domination, submission, encounters with strangers, voyeurism and exhibitionism. Not every tale in The Mammoth Book Of Best New Erotica 13 will accord with your own personal rhythm – but more than a handful of these melodies is sure to resonate.
Let the words find your bones.
