Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator Review

By Cara Sutra

The Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator is the first Lyps sex toy I’m reviewing from the Lyps Bag Of Dicks sent to me by the manufacturers before Christmas. Yeah, I went for the wand style sex toy first. In my ‘bag of dicks’ there was a couple of realistic dildos, a few rabbit vibrators and a couple of other style vibes, but I’ll get to those in due course. I was so busy in bed over Christmas it was difficult to fit in any stilton (not a sexual reference).

Packaging

Each Lyps sex toy came in its own shrink-wrapped pink box bearing the Lyps logo and the product’s unique reference number on the back. It would have been useful (and these reviews would have been published a lot sooner) if each of the boxes had displayed more useful details to the Lyps customer, such as product name, description, functions, power type etc. As it happens I’m now well-versed in navigating both the Lyps website and the Lyps Amazon pages.

For easy reference, I’ve made this image which shows the products I received and their names. You might need to refer to it more than once during the Lyps sex toy reviews journey; I certainly have.

Inside the Box & Charging Up

Inside the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator box, beside the sex toy itself, was the USB charging lead, a black velvet drawstring storage pouch and a small instruction leaflet. There’s also a promotional voucher to claim a freebie if you leave an honest Amazon review for the product enclosed.

The instruction leaflet is basic and pretty much just covers how to charge the toy and how to switch it on and off. It doesn’t look like any huge amount of budget was assigned to the instruction leaflet at all.

No graphics, standard typeface, basic (some may even say vague) instructions. This is probably due to the fact that the Lyps sex toys look like they’re white-labelled from standard Chinese factory offerings (for example, you can find this identical sex toy under another name here at Amazon). Nevertheless, it was simple enough to charge up the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator – just unscrew the end cap to reveal the micro USB port and use the included USB lead to charge it up. A small LED lights up red as it’s charging, and the leaflet informed me that the Hummingbird takes 3 hours to fully charge.

In my experience, having a twist off cap on a rechargeable sex toy is quite unusual; I was worried about losing the cap while I was charging the rest of the vibrator. I made sure I kept the cap close by but I can’t promise I’ll be as careful in the years to come… it would be nice to see a flip off cap which remains attached to the vibrator somehow so people aren’t at risk of losing the caps.

First Impressions

My first impressions of the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator were mixed. At 7 inches in overall length, the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator is comfortable to hold in my hand. Making the Hummingbird even more comfortable is the velvet soft silicone material which covers the mechanical workings inside. However, it’s shockingly bright pink – which is definitely not my top choice when it comes to sex toy colours and it’s just so bog-standard for the industry. It implies no thought has gone into the colours of the Lyps sex toys at all, especially when you see the rest of the range and…yep, they’re all shockingly bright pink too. It would cost more to offer the collection in a variety of colours, and the mass market has to be appealed to for profits’ sake (this is business, after all) but why must it always be pink?

Aesthetics aside -let’s face it, who cares about the colour if it can give you a screaming orgasm- I was looking forward to how the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator would perform in the clitoral stimulation department. It has some stiff competition in my bedroom; top favourite Doxy was recently nervous when newcomer The O-Wand rocked up with its wireless, quiet yet powerful offerings. Could the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator really compete? Cynical Cara said NO.

During Use

Actually, the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator did make me orgasm. And the very first time I used it, too. Big surprise. It’s no Doxy or O-Wand, and the presentation leaves a lot to be desired. But when I whack the pulsating vibrations up to max and press it against my clit, it’s not long before I’m enjoying a very pleasurable orgasm.

I have to hold the head of the vibrator against me, or at least hold it by the neck. I can’t just hold the handle otherwise the flexibility of the neck means I don’t get the intense vibrations I need. it just bends away from my body.

A slight annoyance: the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator is incredibly easy to switch on. Too easy. Often, it only takes me picking up the vibrator to accidentally trigger the on switch, and I usually manage to turn it on while unscrewing the cap as well. The power buttons are flat, too, which mean you need to either somehow memorise where they are before you start playing (er, nope) or get it on the setting you want before you start, and hope you don’t accidentally catch a button while well on the way to your O (I’ve done that a few times as well).

Material

Unlike other sex toys sold through Amazon, I’m feeling pretty convinced that the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator is made from silicone like it says it is. There’s no discernible scent to it, no toxic oiliness leaching from it and it just feels like the FDA approved, medical grade silicone that Lyps have described the material as on the included leaflet and on their website/selling pages.

Another bonus – besides the body safety aspect of a non-porous, non-toxic material – is that the Lyps Hummingbird Vibrator is waterproof. If, like me, you love the style & power of vibration pumped out by the Hummingbird, you can enjoy it in the bath or shower too. It also makes clean-up a breeze. It was a bit concerning to read that water should be kept away from the power buttons (on the included instruction leaflet) – is this toy waterproof or not? …but so far, I haven’t had any issues with its waterproofness.
