Lyps Athena Vibrator Review

By Cara Sutra

This is the sex toy I was most intrigued to try from the Lyps Bag of Dicks I received before Christmas. The Lyps Athena Vibrator is unlike any sex toy I’ve seen before. Oh sure it’s pink and silicone and all that, but it’s double-ended. Nope, not a double-ended dildo; this is a rabbit vibrator one side and a butt plug on the other.

Novel, right?!

Lyps Athena Vibrator Review

Before I reveal how I got on testing the Lyps Athena Vibrator, let’s take a look at the packaging, what you get with the sex toy and my initial thoughts.

Packaging

Like the rest of the Lyps sex toys I received, the Lyps Athena Vibrator comes in a shrink-wrapped, pink box which has minimal details about the specific toy inside. There’s the Lyps logo on the front and a product reference number on the base of the back. It took a trip to the Lyps Online website to find out the exact name of this vibrator, as well as its other specs and functions.

By the way, here’s a helpful graphic referencing all the Lyps sex toys I received:

Inside The Box

Inside the box, as well the Lyps Athena Vibrator, there’s a storage pouch with the Lyps logo, a magnetic charging lead, a very brief and basic instruction leaflet and a small flyer explaining how to claim a freebie in return for an honest Amazon review.

First Impressions

It was so refreshing to open the Lyps Athena Vibrator box and reveal a sex toy in a shape I’ve never seen before. It wasn’t yet another dildo and it wasn’t yet another rabbit vibrator. This toy was a dual stim on one side and a butt plug on the other. I must admit, I had reservations about how well such a sex toy could operate; surely whichever end forms the handle during use will vibrate uncomfortably in my hand?

Lyps Athena Vibrator Review

Despite my worries I was looking forward to finding out more about the Lyps Athena Vibrator and testing it out in the variety of ways offered.

Charging Up

Before using the Lyps Athena Vibrator I had to charge it up, which was pretty easy thanks to the magnetic charging lead. One end attaches magnetically to the two metal nodes centrally located on the Athena, and the other end is plugged into any USB port.

A red LED lights up behind the controls area to let you know it’s charging.

Operation & Functions

There’s three buttons on the Lyps Athena Vibrator which are grouped together in the central area of the toy. Press and hold anywhere to switch on, then it’s: central button to change the vibration setting/pattern, and the button closest the dual stim end to control the vibration intensity of that end (3 intensity levels) and the button closest to the butt plug end to control the vibration intensity of that side (again, three intensity levels).

Lyps Athena Vibrator Review

Putting paid to my initial concerns was the fact that as well as the three intensity levels of either end, there’s an ‘off’ setting for each end – even though the controls area remains lit with the red LED to let you know it’s still ‘on’ (just not vibrating at whichever end you’ve set to off – or both ends might not be vibrating if you’ve found the ‘no vibrate’ setting for both ends.

To turn the Lyps Athena Vibrator completely off, press and hold again til the light goes out.

This dual ended control feature means that the dual stim side can be used while the butt plug side is not vibrating at all, and vice versa. It all lessens the risk of RSI which is a plus point.

Testing Preparation

I must admit, the top constant speed of the Lyps Athena Vibrator seemed pretty powerful, although I wasn’t absolutely sure when just feeling it in my hand that it would bring me to orgasm. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell. The vibrations felt pretty powerful, not that rumbly though – and not “oh-my-god it’s already knocking my socks off and it’s just in my palm!”

The true test would be elsewhere.

The Lyps Athena Vibrator is made with silicone – the sex toy material of choice when it comes to flexible sex toys. It’s non-toxic and non-porous. Water based lubricant accompanies it beautifully, otherwise a bit of ‘drag’ might be experienced – especially if you don’t have a lot of natural lubrication going on at the time. I don’t use silicone lubricant with silicone sex toys, not that I use silicone lubricant anyway. I’m not a massive fan of the stuff. #itchy

Dual Stim Side

With the help of some water based lubricant, I tried the dual stim (rabbit style) side of the Lyps Athena Vibrator first. I’m a big clit stim fan and although it’s difficult to find a rabbit vibrator to suit me, the best chance is with a rechargeable, silicone version with a singular point clit stim, not the split-ear type.

Lyps Athena Vibrator Review

Although the motor powering the dual stim side of the Lyps Athena Vibrator felt powerful enough before testing, it mainly vibrates the shaft, not the clit stim. This didn’t do all that much for me, to be perfectly honest. The shaft isn’t so curved that I could enjoy targeted G-spot stimulation, and the clit stim was just gently purring against my clit area. I’m not really into purring. I prefer rumbly roars.

Giving it a fair trial, I tried the Lyps Athena Vibrator another few times but the same problem surfaced every time. The dual stim side just can’t give me an orgasm. Not only is the power not strong enough to bring me off – vaginally, which I admit is difficult enough anyway, or clitorally – but it’s not the correct shape for my body either. The shaft isn’t as curved as I’d like, and the clit stim doesn’t curve in towards my body to make for easy contact with my clit. I have to bend it this way and that to try and get the vibrating silicone against the parts of my body requiring stimulation.

Butt Plug Side

Maybe the butt plug side would prove more successful.

With the help of a lot more water based lube than I needed for the dual stim side, and after cleaning the Lyps Athena Vibrator thoroughly after my vaginal/clitoral sessions, I tried it out as an anal toy. The dual stim side is long enough for me to ensure a good grip while using the toy anally so I wasn’t worried about it being sucked up into my body and getting lost.

The butt plug side of the Lyps Athena Vibrator is rather deceiving. It looks like your standard small butt plug… until you try to insert it. With a maximum circumference around the widest part of 4.7 inches, I wouldn’t say the experience would be a breeze for an anal newbie, and it required a lot of my patience to get the thing inserted properly. Even with lube. And believe me, the lube is needed.

It’s a rare day when I orgasm purely from anal stimulation, so it would be asking a lot for the Lyps Athena Vibrator to do precisely that. And to answer your question: no, it didn’t make me cum on its own, anally. Sorry. Sorry, butt. It’s really rather lovely though. The vibrating stimulation feels more powerful through the butt plug side – and that’s not only because I have super sensitive anal walls. It feels more powerful on that side even when I’m just holding it in my hand.

When I use a bullet vibe on my clit along with it, the resulting orgasms are truly delicious.

Controls Issue

One minor niggle about the controls on the Lyps Athena Vibrator, which I am sure would become less of an issue over time as I get (even more) used to using it. There are such a lot of combinations achievable with the Athena controls that it’s difficult to remember what you can exactly do with them and how to get to a certain type. I have to keep telling myself that each end is controllable discretely from the other, and that I can turn off the vibration on the end that I’m holding.

I also need to remind myself to turn the Lyps Athena Vibrator off completely after I’m done, not just switch to ‘non-vibrate’ while the red LED behind the controls indicates that the toy isn’t actually off.

What I’d prefer is a separate on switch & controls unit for each side of the toy. When I turn on the Lyps Athena Vibrator, both sides power up and vibrate and it takes quite a bit of fumbling to figure out how to switch off the side I’m gonna hold.

Summary

Despite my initial fascination with a new style of sex toy, it seems there’s a reason you don’t see a lot of rabbit vibrator slash butt plugs out there for sale. I don’t really want a sex toy which is a dual stim one side and an anal sex toy on the other. It just doesn’t work for me.

Even if the rabbit vibrator side of the Lyps Athena Vibrator could bring me to orgasm, I’d still be holding the butt plug handle during use. And when I’m using it as a butt plug, I’m holding the rabbit vibrator style other end, which is strange at best. It also limits how I can enjoy the butt plug; I feel best lying down rather than standing up with the length of the dual stim dangling between my legs, and sitting down with the plug in is out of the question.

It’s also quite difficult to firstly remember how the controls operate either side of the toy during use – this would be difficult even if you didn’t have motors vibrating your nether regions at the time – and secondly, the controls are located close to the entrance of your body so you can’t exactly crane your neck down to make sure you’re pressing the right thing. I guess I shouldn’t generalise. *I* can’t get my neck down between my legs to spy the controls next to my perineum with any ease.

Lyps Athena Vibrator Review

Not exactly sure who would find the Lyps Athena Vibrator to be their perfect vibrator, but it’s not mine. Such a shame after the excitement of finding such a distinctive and unusual sex toy.
