Kegel8 Ultra 20 Review
Cara Sutra reviews an electro stim pelvic toner from Kegel8
I was asked if I’d like to review the Kegel8 Ultra 20 by the lovely people over at Kegel8 a couple of months ago. Although initially apprehensive – both due to the internal electro stim element as well as the fact I don’t tend to respond well to kegel balls – I agreed to give this electro stim pelvic toner a go. It was sent to me free of charge in exchange for this fair and honest review.
Usually I review sex toys and bedroom accessories from a sexual point of view, so it was refreshing to be able to try a product which promises not only sexual improvement capabilities but medical/health related ones too. In fact, Kegel8 is very much a female intimate health retail website, with the focus on improving things for women with a variety of issues. Sex educators such as myself often focus on the fact that strengthening your pelvic floor can provide you with a more satisfying sex life (solo or shared) with stronger orgasms being the main draw. However, strengthening the pelvic floor muscles and tightening those areas of the vagina is something that can be done at home to help correct mild to moderate incontinence, over sensitive bladder, pelvic pain and loss of vaginal tightness after childbirth.
I was sent the Kegel8 Ultra 20 (which is the electro impulse unit and control set, usually £149.99) which includes the Kegel8 Glide Gold Vaginal Probe (usually £32.99 on its own but is included with the Kegel8 Ultra 20). This probe is the internally worn probe which plugs into the Kegel8 Ultra 20 controller. There are a variety of vaginal probes available at Kegel8, which this gold plated electrode style being a high end style. Gold plating on the electrode areas mean there’s no issue if you have a nickel allergy. It has been designed to be easy to insert (even for those with a prolapse or low cervix) and it’s also very lightweight.
So what’s in the Kegel8 Ultra 20 box?
- Kegel8 Glide Gold Vaginal Probe
- Kegel8 Ultra 20 control unit
- Instruction book (Operator’s Manual)
- Quick start guide
- x4 skin electrodes with ‘How To Use Your Electrodes’ instructions
- x2 wires to connect the electrodes to the control unit
- A 9V battery for the Kegel8 controller
- A pillow pack of water based ID Glide lube
My first thoughts were along the lines of, oh god, what a lot of stuff – I hope it’s not too difficult to figure out! It does look a little intimidating if you’re anything like me and usually prefer a simple product with a clearly marked on/off button. I find anything more than that requires a bit of a research session beforehand to establish clearly in my mind just how the product is operated.
By the way, the Kegel8 box was shrink-wrapped sealed so I was completely reassured from a hygiene aspect.
The instruction book is quite heavy-going and long but I understand why this needs to be the case. If electro stimulation products are used incorrectly then they are dangerous. It’s vital that you learn exactly how to use your electro stim products – and what you definitely shouldn’t do – before you begin.
Aside from being a little intimidated over all the bits and pieces included, as well as the in-depth instruction manual, I also had my reservations over using an electro stim product inside my vagina. However, I needed to try out and properly test the Kegel8 Ultra 20 so I had no choice but to get over any apprehension and do my product reviewing duty. It is a tough job sometimes!
Before I could get going I needed to insert the 9V battery into the control unit, which was pretty easy to do.
Feeling more familiar with the instructions, the settings and the definitely-do-nots, I got comfortable on my bed and lubed myself up with some water-based lubricant. I also put a dot on the gold plated electrodes on the side of the vaginal probe. It was actually really easy to insert and I don’t think I’d have needed the lubricant at all for insertion purposes, but I wanted to use lube in any case due to the electro stim aspect.
There are two output areas at the top of the controller and when using the vaginal probe you just need to plug its one wire into the output marked A.
I was worried that upon turning on the control unit that it would be set on high or I’d get a horrible electric shock to the vagina but nothing happened when I pressed the on button. Thank goodness for that. You need to use the buttons on the control unit to select your programme first of all; I started (as advised by the instruction book) with the sensitivity test. The mA (milliamps) is the amount of electro stim output by the control unit, and you’re advised to raise that number until you can feel the electrical impulses through the probe. In this way you can get a feel for how many mA you can both feel and tolerate. The instruction book advises that if you can’t feel it over 50mA then you may have too internal nerve damage. If, after using the probe as instructed for one month you still can’t feel anything, then you’re advised to seek medical help.
There’s one programme which is more intense than the others (programme 8) and on that one the user is advised to not go over 25mA with the probe or 15mA when using the electrode pads. There’s a lot to the Kegel8 Ultra 20 but the included instruction manual makes it clear what steps you need to take for whatever form of therapy you require – whether it’s using the vaginal probe or using the electrode pads for other health issues.
Despite my apprehension, the electro stim isn’t actually painful or uncomfortable in anyway. I guess Kegel8 wouldn’t remain in business if it was! Vaginal electro stim products also wouldn’t be a thing. I knew it was an irrational fear but I still didn’t fully trust that I’d be able to deal with it and I’m glad I challenged myself with it and was able to conquer this fear. The electro pulses aren’t constant; they act as the pelvic floor exercise for a short time then there’s a rest period for a short time. It continues like this – electro stim exercise, then a rest period – until the programme you’ve selected is over. The display screen shows you the amount of electro power you’ve selected, the programme number and if you’re in the work/rest part all the way through, as well as how much time there is left on that programme.
Also included in the box are the standard electrode pads, so you could use the Kegel8 Ultra 20 as a TENs machine for lower back pain or similar. The usual warnings regarding electro stim need to be taken into consideration; don’t use on your face, don’t cross over the heart area. You can read more about electro stim and the do’s and don’ts in this related article.
After use I clean the vaginal probe with soap/toy spray under running water as advised in the included booklet. It says you can also wipe with a disinfectant wipe. I don’t submerge the entire thing under water as the probe is attached to the wire which goes into the controller.
I continued my vaginal tightening training with the Kegel8 Ultra 20 and moved on from the sensitivity programmes (there’s 2 of those) to the actual pelvic toning programmes. All of these start on a 0mA strength and it’s up to you to raise the electro power amount to where it’s comfortable for you. The instruction book advises that you should aim for a minimum of 25mA power for the electro stimulation to be completely efficient in exercising the pelvic floor muscles.
It’s been just over a month of regular use of the Kegel8 Ultra 20 now, although I must confess I haven’t used it every day as the instruction book says I should. It says to use once or twice a day for best results. Once comfortable using it I found I didn’t have to be splayed on the bed in Typical Testing Position anymore; the probe can be worn internally and the control unit with wires held in the hand while you watch TV with your clothes on over the top. Pretty much like a wired controller love egg toy, but for medical reasons. #legit
So does it work? Do I have a steel vagina that man, woman or sex toy now enter entirely at their own risk? Well I’m a long way off from being able to crush a sex toy with my vaginal muscles but I have actually noticed a change. My orgasms do seem to be slightly stronger (although of course this may be somewhat psychosomatic) and although I wasn’t incontinent in the slightest my bladder isn’t as sensitive any more. I did have a slightly overactive bladder, especially late at night, and this has eased up. I haven’t made any other changes in this area so it must be down to the Kegel8 Ultra 20.
As another bonus, I’ve also conquered my fear of using electro stim products inside my vagina which has gone from my soft limits list to my ‘sure, why not’ list.
9/10 – just losing one point because it is quite a complex piece of kit, there’s a lot of reading up to do before you use it and the electro stim was something I had to warm to. In my opinion though this product does as it promises and once you get past any internal electro stim fears you can reap the benefits.
If you’d like to try out and reap the benefits of the Kegel8 Ultra 20, you can buy yours here for £149.99.
Thanks so much to Kegel8 for sending this fascinating and efficient product for the purposes of this review.
