the accidental call girl by portia da costa - review UK

I was sent The Accidental Call Girl by Portia Da Costa by the lovely Cara Sutra to guest review.  I am a great fan of reading erotica so it was right up my street.

It is a well written book which unlike other erotic fiction I have read switches between the leading male and females points of view which is a refreshing change. This book also has moments that are quite amusing, I’m not saying I was laughing so hard my sides hurt but there were several amused snorts.

The book starts with the leading female (Lizzie) and leading male (John) meeting in a hotel bar where he mistakenly thinks she is a high end call girl, she decides to go along with it for fun as he is obviously stunningly gorgeous and so the story begins. It’s a bit similar to pretty woman in that he buys up all her free time whilst he is there on business and when together their feelings for each other grow. Lizzie is worrying during this how to tell him she is not actually ‘Bettie the call girl’ which she discuses with the obligatory gay housemate.

In theory this book is great however for me it just wasn’t up there with other erotic novels I have previously read. I think my main issue with it is that you don’t really learn much about the characters, I didn’t feel like I knew them at all which was a bit off putting for me as it just made me feel like something was missing.

Don’t get me wrong I found it hard to put down and read it from start to finish in 2 days but at the same time it didn’t really do much for me. There was not a single scene in it where I was overcome with the urge to masturbate whilst reading it or that I remembered to flick back to to get me in the mood at a later point. Which is odd considering sex scenes have been squeezed into every nook and cranny of this book. Perhaps it is just me, perhaps I need more to arouse me now that I am reading erotica quite often and I possibly would have loved this book had it been one of the first erotic novels I had read.

Spoiler alert: (but not really a spoiler- come on, how did you think it was going to end?)

I was vaguely surprised by the ending in that the main characters reconciled before the end of the book, considering it is a trilogy I would have expected it to have been carried over to entice you to buy the next instalment. That is not to say I didn’t see it coming. Who is ever really shocked when the main characters in an erotic trilogy decide to make a go of things?

Overall it was a well written book that certainly helped pass the time in a relatively enjoyable way, I wouldn’t recommend it to those who regularly read erotic fiction and are wanting something to read as an aid to masturbation but at the same time I highly doubt it would turn you off. If you are looking for a lighthearted probably is mildly sweet and amusing then you will probably like this book. I am going to read the second and third books just in case there is something amazing in them, however considering the names are ‘the accidental mistress’ and ‘the accidental bride’ I can probably hazard a guess as to what Portia Da Costa has in store for Lizzie and John.
