10 Reasons To Become A Sex Toy Tester
By Mel MacFarlane of Voluptasse
A lot of people that I speak to about my role as a sex toy tester tell me what an amazing job I have, and how wonderful my life must be. I always respond with a negative, ‘oh you don’t understand the level of work that’s involved’ and that ‘it’s actually a very demanding job’. As a result, I began to feel frustrated by the lack of understanding about the job that I do. Despite what people think, reviewing isn’t lying around in bed getting free sex toys and enjoying twenty orgasms a day, it’s much more complex than that.
What started off as a job that I feel so passionately about started to become something that I portrayed negatively to other people. In my mind, if I told them more about the downside of sex toy reviewing they would appreciate my hard work a little more, or respect the role that I play. In fact, over the last few months, I spent that long focusing on the long hours and the demanding workload that it began to diminish my own love of sex toy testing.
This came to a head a couple of weeks ago. I began a brand new business venture and declared that I couldn’t write about sex toys forever. However, when push came to shove, I found that I couldn’t walk away from sex toy reviewing because it’s a part of my life that I absolutely love.
Therefore, I’d like to thank Cara for giving me a great platform to refocus and re-embrace my love of sex toy reviewing. By focusing on the aspects of sex toy testing that I love, it reminds me why I do get up every day with a spring in my step, and a smile on my face.
Are you ready?
All the amazing orgasms you enjoy as a sex toy tester
As a sex toy tester, you encounter a lot of troublesome sex toys and they won’t always get you off. However, there are some sex toys like the Doxy Wand Massager which deliver the kind of orgasm you’ve only ever dreamed about. One of the exciting aspects of reviewing, is looking at the sex toy that you’ve been allocated, and wondering whether this will be the one to take you to Nirvana. I must admit, I’ve been pleasantly surprised on many occasions. I’ve also experienced terror, usually at the hands of the brilliantly fun guys at UberKinky.
Sex toy testing is perfect for getting other people involved
A lot of my reviewer friends are single, but the beauty of sex toy reviewing is that it’s a great way to get someone else involved. Whether it’s a partner, a fuck buddy or the hot date you’ve been flirting with for weeks. Enjoy some no contact teasing by reviewing the product live on Facetime or by web cam, or why not try something a little different by asking your partner to take charge of the toy and use it on you. A versatile experience always makes for a great review, and it gives your readers lots of new ideas to experiment with.
As a sex toy tester, you can protect your privacy with an alias
Sex toy testing is normally conducted in private, and for this reason it is much easier to stay anonymous. Lots of people in the adult industry write under an alias, so this aspect of their lives remains completely separate from their everyday persona. This is great for those who want the freedom to write about their personal experiences, without the worry that a family member or their boss will be reading it.
As a sex toy tester, sex is better than ever!
I’ve found that reviewing sex toys has enabled me to enjoy an even better sex life. Before I bought my first sex toy at an Ann Summer’s party, I suffered with self-image issues and had lots of hang ups about sex and my feelings towards it. Learning to explore my body, and understanding how normal sex and masturbation was completely changed my life for the better. Now, because I enjoy so many great orgasms, my libido is very high and I am more relaxed and open minded with the things that I’m willing to try.
Reviewing sex toys has taught me more about my body, and helped me understand my likes and dislikes. This in turn, ensures that I enjoy a happier and more fulfilling sex life.
Sex toy testing is the perfect way to learn about sex toys
Within my circle of friends and my online followers, I am the ‘go to’ person with any sex toy related questions. I will never blindly pick up a sex toy and think ‘this looks alright; I’ll give it a try’. I look at functions, modes, combinations, level of stimulation and different features. I’ll check the materials used and compatible lubricants. I’ll seek out the retailer and read their terms and conditions. In short, I am the ultimate sex toy nerd (as well as Cara, who knows even more than I do!)
This is the aspect of the role that I enjoy the most. I love checking out the newest sex toy innovations and seeing what’s on offer. My tendency to over-analyse means that masturbation is no longer a natural process. I’m always testing the toy even when I am not meant to testing the toy, but exploring the mechanics of the product is by far my favourite part of the reviewing process. At the moment, I am looking forward to reviewing the Flickering Intimate Arouser from CalExotics and love the idea of updating my powerful wand massager using silicone attachments.
As a sex toy tester, you learn a lot about other people
Whenever anyone discusses their sex toy needs with me, they do so in absolute confidence. I have never repeated any aspect of those private conversations and would never do so. They are trusting me with some of their most important relationship secrets, and in return I help them to enjoy a better and more fulfilling experience. Once people start to talk, it’s a little like therapy and I learn a lot about the people I speak to. It’s these private conversations that help me to understand my readers a little more, and ensure that my blog and the articles I write for other sex toy retailers, are relevant to the everyday needs of the consumer.
You make lots of new friends as a sex toy tester
The adult retail industry is a wonderful industry to work in. I love the exciting mix of people and I love the fact that it’s much more relaxed than the previous industry that I worked in. During my time in the adult industry, I have forged life-long friendships and met so many great people. I certainly wouldn’t have enjoyed the same successes that I have enjoyed today if it wasn’t for the support and advice of my industry friends.
I created a business out of being a sex toy tester
When I started the Voluptasse sex shop, I added sex toy reviews to the site because I thought that it was a great way to let my customers see how the product actually worked. When other sex toy websites saw what I was doing and how successful it was, they started to send their products to me for review too. The magazine aspect of Voluptasse ran independently from the sex toy shop, so there weren’t any conflicts of interest and I found that I really enjoyed writing.
With the experience that I gained writing my sex toy reviews, and copywriting for the Voluptasse store. My reputation as an industry writer began to grow. I started to get a lot of enquiries about specialist adult industry business writing and advertising on the Voluptasse blog.
Eventually, I realised that I enjoyed copy writing and reviewing more than I enjoyed running the Voluptasse shop. I closed the shop and set up as a freelance journalist and adult industry copywriter. Since then I have written for lots of different businesses and even for print magazines. The hours are long, the money isn’t brilliant but I am doing something that I absolutely love!
Being a sex toy tester fits in with your personal life
Because you choose your workload, you can review as many or as few sex toys as you like. At first, it’s really tempting to say yes to everything. However, if you are overwhelmed with your workload – something that starts off as a hobby will very quickly become a chore. I started by buying my own sex toys and writing my own reviews. This helped me to gauge how long it would take me to review, without the added pressure of expectation.
Reviewing sex toys is really rewarding
When you look at the bigger picture, reviewing sex toys is more than just a hobby. Your view on a particular product has the ability to make or break the sale, and that’s a huge responsibility. If you write a review, remember to be fair. Not every product will work for you, but it may work for someone else. I remember receiving a huge black fisting dildo in the post and I was absolutely terrified. It wasn’t anything that I’d every tried before and no matter how hard I tried I simply couldn’t get the product to work for me. It looked strange, it was terrifying and I simply couldn’t find a way for me to enjoy it. Was this the fault of the product, or was the issue with me? Would you rate this otherwise perfectly good product poorly because you don’t like it?
It wasn’t the fault of the product and I reviewed it accordingly. The product was a great product and ideal for someone seeking this kind of titillation. It just wasn’t right for me. Reviewing responsibly and fairly can be tricky, but when you get great feedback from followers, it’s really rewarding.
