It’s The Big Gay Review in the sex blogger spotlight this week – and what a treat it is to feature them at Cara Sutra. I was lucky enough to meet the Big Gay Review team at the recent ETO Show, at BlogSpot, and we enjoyed an all-too-brief chat. I hope to meet them at another event soon so we can catch up properly!
The Big Gay Review blog is a professional website which comprises sex toy reviews, sex advice and personal musings. They are always on the look out for new site sponsors so if you’d like to advertise, please contact them here.
You may have seen mentions of The Big Gay Review in my recent BlogSpot report in ETO Magazine, or featured as part of ElectraStim’s newsletter.

The Big Gay Review
Hello! This is David here from The Big Gay Review and I appreciate you taking the time to read my random mutterings at this here ‘Spotlight’ article! I promise I will keep this short and sweet – I’m sure you’ve all got lots of important things to do… so here we go!
What’s your blog name/online handle and how did you come up with the idea?
So the blog is called The Big Gay Review and I really wish there was a ‘hilarious’ anecdote to go with why I called the blog that – but the reality is, I thought it would be funny. I was thinking about things like ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ and basically thought ‘Let’s just call it what it is – it’s a review blog written by a big gay!’. And that’s honest to the dildo gods the reason behind the name.
Which country do you live in?
I reside in the glorious UK where I do love to drink tea and eat crumpets. They’re the best!
Approximately how long have you been sex blogging?
So I started the blog back on the 19th May 2014… and here we are over a year later…!
Why did you start a sex blog or reviewing sex toys?
In all honesty, the blog was just started on a whim because I was bored – however I had been reviewing sex toys for a couple of years, as I had become involved with the Sex Toy Tester program over at Lovehoney. I was aware that there were blogs out there dedicated to sex toys and I would ‘give it a try’ – not expecting it to go anywhere. I started by simply re-writing my reviews (as I was now able to be a bit more ‘explicit’) and added some very badly written ‘erotic fiction’ and just kind of let it sit for a while. We had a few ‘readers’ – and then I joined Twitter – and that’s when I think things really took off for us.
What’s your favourite thing about blogging?
Well obviously the toys(!) but really, it’s actually getting to speak to like-minded people in an environment where people don’t judge you for your sexual quirks or tastes. It’s gratifying when I receive emails from people who say “Oh, I bought PRODUCT after reading your review and it’s been incredible…” – or they’ve taken away something useful from one of the few guides that I have written. I like to think that I also provide a unique insight, and provide entertaining and well written content (obviously, if this is not the case PLEASE TELL ME!!).
Do you use social media? If so, where can we find you?
Do your friends know you’re a sex blogger?
Some of my work friends know what I do, and my best friend knows… they haven’t read it (and at this point, I’m not sure I’d let them). It’s not because I am ashamed – I just think that they really don’t want to know about my in and outs when it comes to sex. Although if they really did want to read it… well I suppose I would be alright with that.
Share with us a funny or interesting experience that’s happened to you in the course of your blogging.
There haven’t been any ‘funny’ experiences – but attending the ETO Show in 2015 was definitely an ‘interesting’ experience. I have never attended anything like that before, and it was definitely a very ‘eye-opening’ experience. That, and I got to meet some of the amazing people I’ve spoken to online, such as Hella_Rude, Just Indecerous, HornyGeekGirl, TheCarnalQueen as well as all of the amazing retailers and manufacturers we’ve worked with. I’m already planning my 2016 visit!
Will you still be blogging in 5 years time?
I really hope so! Although nothing is set in stone. Absolutely anything could happen between now and then – but I have every intention to keep going for as long as I possibly can. If you keep coming, then so will I! (boom boom!)
If you review sex toys, what are the top three toys you wish you could get your hands on next?
- The Doxy Skittle: I got my hands on this at the ETO Show and I was both astounded, terrified and confused. All I know, is I need it, and I need it right now.
- Kink Lab Neon Wand
- Anything by Liberator (Wedge/Fleshlight Mount).
Who is your favourite adult shopping company, and why?
There are so many awesome retailers that I have worked with, I simply can’t pick a favourite. I’m really sorry for the boring diplomatic answer, but that really is how I feel!
Do you prefer blogging fictional erotica, real life sex anecdotes or factual based content such as reviews and advice guides?
I definitely prefer writing reviews/guides. I’ve tried my hand at ‘fiction’ before and I’m pretty sure it was just a series of terrible porn clichés. But hey, if you like that – maybe I’ll bring it back. We’ll see!
