Q&A with Miss Ruby from Miss Ruby Reviews
Why did you start a sex blog or reviewing sex toys?
Six months ago, I’d have laughed if you suggested that I’d soon be running a sex toy review blog. I’m a very private person, and I don’t usually talk about my sex life with my own friends, let alone the public.
The start of Miss Ruby Reviews was all very spontaneous. A few months before I started my blog, MissRubyReviews.com, I watched a mini-series documentary called Frisky Business. This documentary followed the comings and goings of the staff at Lovehoney, one of the larger online sex toy stores in the UK. I loved the series so much because, for the first time, I heard people talking about sex toys in a frank and honest way. This sparked my initial interest in becoming more involved in the industry. A few months later, after a particularly expensive sex-toy shopping splurge, my partner suggested that, if I was going to spend all that money, I may as well do something creative with my purchases. I took one hour to think about it then set out to buy a domain name. That shopping splurge gave me material for the first couple of weeks of my blog.
What’s your blog name/online handle and how did you come up with the idea?
I didn’t put a lot of thought into my blog name, Miss Ruby Reviews. Naming my blog was the first thing I did, back when I really didn’t know what I was doing or how quickly things would expand. I’d never created a blog before, so I really didn’t know what would make a good name. I knew I needed some sort of alias though, and I’ve always loved the word “Ruby,” so I played around with variations of “Ruby” and “Review” until I came up with one of the only available “.com” domains: MissRubyReviews.com.
Approximately how long have you been sex blogging?
I’ve only been sex blogging for three months now, since January 2015. I definitely feel like the new girl on the block! I’m constantly learning new things about the industry and about blogging, and I’ve really relied on other bloggers for advice during moments of confusion.
If not already a professional blog: would you say you’re looking to earn a living from blogging eventually, or will it remain a hobby?
Although I’m new to the world of sex blogging, I definitely intend to stay here. It would be amazing to earn a living from blogging within the next five years because it is something I’m having so much amazing fun with. If I don’t make a living from this, though, I’ll definitely be kicking around with this as my hobby.
Do you prefer blogging fictional erotica, real life sex anecdotes or factual based content such as reviews and advice guides?
Currently, 90% of my content consists of sex toy reviews. The remaining 10% is made up of real sex-life anecdotes/lessons, which I hope to expand upon into the future.
What’s your favourite thing about blogging?
There’s so much to love about blogging. I love writing and setting challenges for myself, so it’s fun to set myself a goal of publishing one or two 1200-word posts per week. I also LOVE taking photos. Sex toy photography is remarkably fun to do. Oftentimes, official product photos make the toy look bland and boring, but I love showing readers how stunning toys can be in person.
But, so far, my favourite thing about blogging is how it has the power to connect you with so many like-minded people. I’ve never really had the chance to talk about my love for sex toys or share my comments/complaints about my purchases. The only person that heard much about the sex toys I got was my partner. Sex, sex toys, or sexuality isn’t something I can talk to many of my friends about, but starting a review blog has connected me to other bloggers and readers that are totally frank, honest, and feminist about these subjects. It’s great to connect with people that agree that sex toys can be healthy and empowering!
Tell us about three other bloggers you admire, and why.
I admire every sex blogger I’ve come across so far, honestly. It takes guts to tell total strangers whether a certain nub on an object hits your g-spot the right way. It takes guts to then take pictures of that object and plaster it all over the internet and invite commentary from strangers. So every sex blogger has my applause. There are a few review bloggers that I really look up to though: HeyEpiphora, Emmeline Peaches and Naughty Reenie. I used Epiphora’s Beginners Guide to Sex Toy Reviewing a ton during my first few weeks. It was my bible, really, and I wouldn’t have known how to start things going without it. Emmeline Peaches, on the other hand, features totally awesome art and really thorough reviews. Lastly, Naughty Reenie’s content always makes me laugh because she has an amazing sense of humor.
Which country do you live in?
I live in Canada. I love Canada, but I don’t love how Canada has a small presence in the sex toy industry compared to the US and the UK. There are very few women-friendly sex toy shops in my area, and sometimes the Canadian online retailers I frequent simply don’t carry the products I want. Shipping to Canada can be a pain! For these reasons, I’m always thrilled when I see another woman-friendly Canadian sex toy boutique open up.
If you review sex toys, what are the top three toys you wish you could get your hands on next?
Being a sex toy reviewer has exposed me to toys I never knew existed. Before, I was limited to whatever my favourite Canadian online boutique carried. Now, I’m exposed to all kinds of brands because I read other bloggers’ reviews on a weekly basis. There a few toys I’m really desperate the get my hands on. The first is the We-Vibe Touch. It’s been on my radar for a while. Incidentally, it was promised to me by a company but then that company closed down. I have and love the We-Vibe Tango and I’m so curious to see how the two compare. I also really want to try out one (or five) of the VixSkin dildos from Vixen Creations. I love soft silicone and I’ve heard amazing things about that line of dildos. Third, I want (no, need) a Liberator Throe. I’ve heard it stops all manner of liquids from wrecking your bed…
