– Cara Sutra
I’m Gritty Woman, the author and creator of grittywoman.com, a sex positive blog where I share my opinions on all things sexual. On my blog you will find sex toy reviews (in written and video format), educational guides and inspirational articles that cover a wide variety of topics, from the basics, right through to BDSM and kink. As well as writing, I also have a passion for photography and like to share my erotic photography on my blog.
What is your blog name/online handle?
You can find my blog at grittywoman.com.
Which country do you live in?
I live in the UK.
Approx how long have you been sex blogging?
I have been blogging for approximately 15 months.
Why did you start a sex blog, or reviewing sex toys?
A few years ago, I was browsing online sex toy retailers, looking to make a purchase, when I stumbled upon a company called Lovehoney. This company offered people the opportunity to test free sex toys, in exchange for an impartial review and being a highly sexed woman who wanted to try everything, I thought I would give it a go. I enjoyed writing, so it was win-win.
I joined Lovehoney’s forums and as time passed, I realised that I really enjoyed using my passion and experience to help others, whether it be about sex toys, or sex in general. I was actually pretty good at it, so this inspired me to start my own blog. I wanted a place of my own that I could fill with my sex toy reviews, guides and articles relating to sex, relationships, kink and BDSM. 15 months later, here I am, thoroughly enjoying myself.
What is your favourite thing about blogging?
There are so many things I love about blogging. I enjoy being able to sit in a quiet space, just me, my laptop and my imagination and write about sex, whether it be a review, an educational guide or a personal article. Sex is as big a passion for me as blogging is and ultimately my aim is to help others enjoy a healthy, happy sex life. There is nothing better than waking up to the wonderful comments left by my readers and knowing that my words helped or inspired another person. This is definitely my favourite thing about blogging.
Do your friends know you are a sex blogger?
Yes, my closest friends and family members know what I do and some of them even come to me for tips or freebies. If I ever came up against someone who did have a problem with it, I doubt they would be in my life for very long. Sex is not something we should be ashamed of (or shamed for having).
Have you ever done anything specifically so you can blog about it afterwards?
As a sex toy reviewer, I use each product with the intention of writing about it afterwards, but this is obvious. I don’t think I have ever done anything sexual with the sole intention of blogging about it afterwards, but I often pull on my past (and recent) sexual experiences when writing guides and articles. I write a lot about chastity and orgasm denial, for example, and this is very much a part of my sex life with my partner.
Do you take part in blog memes, if so, which ones?
I do! My favourite meme is Sinful Sunday (which is all about the image) and I try to participate in this one every week. I really enjoy taking erotic photographs that tell a story. As a BDSM enthusiast, my photographs often feature an element of kink. I have also participated sporadically in Toy With Me Tuesday, Sultry Saturday and Kink Of The Week (The latter is another personal favourite and I intend to contribute more when I get hold of some free time).
Share with us a funny or interesting experience that has happened to you in the course of your blogging.
I have managed to embarrass myself on numerous occasions, but after some initial cringing, I can laugh about it. In the past year I have managed to:
- Post pictures of giant Bad Dragon dildos to my personal Facebook account
- Invite my readers to “enter me” (Thanks Cara for spotting that one!)
- Referred to someone as though they were male, for about a month before realising this person was actually female.
- Used the word “vagina” when talking about the vulva. (“Shave your vagina”) Fail!
But we are all human and we all make mistakes. I am still learning new things about sex and sexuality every day and don’t believe I will ever know everything there is to know about this hugely diverse topic. I never want to stop learning and this is why I avoid referring to myself as an expert. I prefer the term “sex geek”.
Will you still be blogging in 5 years time?
I certainly hope so. I have no intention of stopping any time soon.
If you’re not already a professional blog, would you say you are looking to earn a living eventually or will it remain a hobby?
When I first began blogging, I looked at it purely as a hobby and I believe that if I had started with the sole aim of earning an income from it, I would not have made it to this point in time. Sex blogging in particular is something I am extremely passionate about and I put a lot of my time and energy into my work because I enjoy it. However, hobbies don’t pay the bills and considering I now do this full time, I am definitely hoping to become a professional blogger. I recently began accepting advertising on my blog and have begun writing professionally for others. It is early days, but I definitely love my job!
Tell us three other bloggers you admire and why?
Molly’s Daily Kiss: Molly is an amazing woman and a fantastic blogger. She blogs from the heart and soul and opens herself up to share her experiences and stories with her readers. Her writing is just so real. You know when you read an article and can identify so much with the words? Well, this is what Molly provides. (If that makes sense) She is also a fantastic erotic photographer. Her pictures speak volumes. Despite being such a popular and busy blogger, she is so welcoming, friendly and helpful to everyone. She went out of her way to help me on numerous occasions and asks for nothing. I cannot recommend her enough.
Cara Sutra: Cara covers a little of everything (erotica, guides, reviews, real life stories, BDSM, beautiful photography and so much more) and she does it all amazingly well. She is such a talented writer and blogger and just like Molly, she puts herself out to help people in the community. She has such broad experience and knowledge and uses it to create articles that inspire you and make you think “YES!” You can see how passionate she is in every post. I have had the pleasure of meeting Cara and she is just as wonderful and beautiful in real life.
Dangerous Lilly: Lilly has taught me so much. She writes amazing articles on sex blogging, providing guides and information and she goes out of her way to provide extensive information on sex toy materials. Her reviews are thorough and completely honest and this is the woman who recommended the We-Vibe Tango to me. For that, I love her.
If you review sex toys, what are the top 3 toys you wish you could get your hands on next?
I would love to review the famous Njoy Pure Wand, as I am often reading amazing things about this sex toy. I have also always wanted to try a Liberator wedge, because I have a disability that can often affect my sex life and I believe the Liberator products would help, adding more variety to my sex life. Finally I would really like to review a Violet Wand, because this toy fascinates me. Of course, I would never say no to reviewing one of those fucking machines that you can attach Fleshlights too. I can dream, right?
Who is your favourite adult shopping company and why?
This is a difficult question, because I have favourites depending on the category. I am a huge fan of Lovehoney, as they stock such a large selection of products, have great prices and amazing customer care standards (Live chat, 365 returns and free delivery over £10). I tend to purchase vibrators, dildos and accessories (Such as lube) from this shop.
I also shop at Uberkinky, because this company stocks a wider range of quality BDSM and kink gear. I feel like a kid in a sweet shop when I visit this store. I also support the smaller, more specialist stores, like ThatPosition and Sex and Metal. I think I just like to keep my options open.
Do you prefer blogging fictional erotica, real life anecdotes or factual based content such as reviews and advice guides?
This is difficult, because I enjoy all the above. I personally find it easier to write factual articles and guides, but I believe this is because I have written so many more of this type of article, so it is comfortable. However, for many months I have had this itch to write more fictional erotica and to open up more and share some real life anecdotes. I have started to scratch this itch. I have a few unfinished articles along these lines and come back to them often to add a little more, so hopefully soon you will see more of these on my blog.
