Interview with FemDom Erotica author, Alex Jordaine

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the novelist Alex Jordaine. He is the UK’s leading Femdom writer and author of the highly acclaimed ‘Mistress’ series of books. In these novels strong women are firmly in charge and men are there to serve and obey them. ‘Mistress Severity’ is the latest thrilling addition to the series and, as with the others, is available as either an e-book or a paperback.

Cara: ‘Mistress Severity’ is the sixth book in your ‘Mistress’ series, which all have distinctive electric blue covers depicting a beautiful dominatrix. How do you feel about being an ‘author brand’?

Alex: I like it and have my publisher, the excellent Xcite Books, to thank for making it happen. My only concern is that some readers coming to the ‘Mistress’ books for the first time might jump to the conclusion that they should be read in sequence. Whenever I get the opportunity I’m always at pains to emphasize that all of my ‘Mistress’ books are ‘one-offs’. Each of them stands alone, with an entirely different cast of characters, locations etc, and they can therefore be read in any order.

Cara: How did you get into writing Femdom erotica?

Alex: If you want to write well and with real conviction it’s a good rule of thumb to write about something you both know and are passionate about. In my case that’s BDSM and Femdom. That’s why I chose the genre of Femdom erotica when I started writing. I’ve stuck with it ever since because I’ve found it works so well for me as a story teller: all those strict rules, all that seething emotion and sexuality. Something’s got to give and when it does the story kicks in with a vengeance.

Cara: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received as a writer?

Alex: To always remember my audience. And I always do. The audience for my ‘Mistress’ books are by definition interested in Femdom and BDSM, want characters and a story they can really engage with, and most importantly want to be turned on by what they’re reading. I try hard not to let them down and every one of my books is as good as I can possibly make it.

One of the first reviews I received for my work described it as a BDSM lover’s dream and gave it a, quote, multiple O’s rating. I aim to have the same effect on my readers with every ‘Mistress’ book I write.

That’s not however to suggest that the stories shy away from dark emotions. Loneliness, loss, despair, regret, trauma, you name it. They’re all to be found in the books but explored in a way that I hope adds to the eroticism of the stories rather than detracting from it. As I say, I always remember my audience and I believe that is one of the main reasons the ‘Mistress’ books have developed the following that they have.

Cara: What do you enjoy most about writing?

Alex: I enjoy all aspects of writing but if I had to single out one thing it would be the way I constantly surprise myself. I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve got to the end of a chapter I’ve just written and thought, ‘Well, I didn’t expect that to happen.’ It’s weird because it’s come out of my head. You think I’d know what was coming. I believe readers pick up on that element of surprise and it adds to their enjoyment of the stories.

A compliment I’ve received quite a few times is that the reader found it difficult to put the book down and didn’t want it to end. I can’t think of much higher praise for a book than that and I love it when my work connects with readers that way. It’s great to give so much pleasure to people and that is a strong motivator to me as a writer.

Cara: All your ‘Mistress’ books are dedicated to Mistress G. Who is she?

Alex: Mistress G is my long term partner, dominatrix, muse and the love of my life. We have been serious players on the London fetish scene for over a decade. My books are escapist fiction but they have an authenticity about them based on my personal experience of BDSM with Mistress G.  Again, I think readers pick up on that at some level and it enhances their enjoyment of the stories.

Cara: Your ‘Mistress’ books are not for the fainthearted. Would you agree?

Alex: I would and it’s unavoidable, I’m afraid. It’s not a problem as I see it though. They are very much niche fiction, after all, and are explicitly marketed as such by Xcite Books. They are aimed at readers who have an appreciation of the dynamics of BDSM: the passion and intensity of the power exchange, the endorphin high of the pleasure-pain, the almost tantric nature of the sex involved, and above all the trust that is such a vitally important part of it all.

Also, although my ‘Mistress’ novels are full of graphic discipline, bondage and domination, they are essentially love stories. They explore the redemptive power of love and celebrate women. That is as true of ‘Mistress Severity’, the latest book in the series, as it is of any of the others.

Cara: ‘Mistress Severity’ is also a mystery story of sorts too, isn’t it?

Alex: That’s right. The formidable Mistress Katya has put her second-in-command Justine into shackles and banished her to a remote dungeon. But why has she taken this extreme action? Neither woman is telling. It’s an intriguing starting point for what is a fast moving and, I hope, highly erotic story. The novel is tightly structured, all the action taking place during two incredibly intense weeks and involving a small cast of kinky characters.

Cara: Do you have a favourite among those kinky characters?

Alex: Yes, it’s anxious, androgynous Nick who first makes his appearance at the beginning of week two. Nick discovers his true nature within a thrillingly strict regime of female domination and discipline. I found bringing to life his personal voyage of discovery an enjoyable challenge.

Cara: What have you got in the pipeline currently?

Alex: The seventh in the ‘Mistress’ series, ‘Bound to the Mistress’, comes out in 2014 and I’m well advanced with writing that. I’m also in the process of sketching out in broad outline the plot for number eight in the series, ‘Mistress Absolute’, which is due to see the light of day the following year.

Cara: I’m glad that the ‘Mistress’ series is continuing to go as strong as ever, Alex. Thanks very much for the interview. It’s been a real pleasure.

Alex: For me too, Cara.
