Lube makes everything better, so when we were given the chance to try something different in these handy System JO H2O Water Based Lube sample tubes we were keen to try it.

As it turned out, our opportunity to review these sample sized tubes happened to coincide with a short trip away we were having together, so they seemed ideal. I believe that these are meant purely for sample purposes, but with a few minor adjustments to the packaging they would make ideal ‘travel’ lube.

My first mistake with these System JO H2O Water Based Lube samples was waiting “until they were required” before opening them. Whilst it looks like the tubes have a convenient screw type cap, this is actually just of the pull-and-twist style. It would have been handy if removing the cap had opened the tube in some way, or even if the nozzle of the tube had some kind of feature to allow it to be snapped open. Alas, the nozzle is just a continuation of the tube, formed to shape and sealed at the end. Had we been at home this would not have been too much of an issue, a simple pair of scissors and it would have been open, but being away in a hotel as we were I tried a number of methods before I had to resort to biting it open with my teeth!

Opening the tube with my teeth did have the advantage that I discovered the taste of the System JO H2O lube early on in the review! It is incredibly sweet, but more something that I would liken to the taste of artificial sweetener tabs, rather than that of sugar. Not offensive, but not something I would like to make a habit of tasting, and my wife really didn’t like the taste of it either.

In use we found that a little lube goes quite a long way, it is not a thick lube, but despite what the name may suggest it isn’t overly watery either. The sample tube contains 4ml of the lube, and we have used it several times for the review without it running out.
It behaves more like an oil, or perhaps a silicone based lube (I haven’t used one for comparison), rather than how other water based lubes we have used behave. It doesn’t get tacky or dry out, but rather almost gets greasy. It does leave your skin feeling soft, almost moisturised, but also greased. Adding more lube just keeps everything slick, if perhaps a bit ‘grabby’, but without making everything overly slippery.

Personally we didn’t like the consistency for vaginal sex and prefer the feeling of the wetter water based lube that we normally use. For male masturbation the lubricant works reasonably well, with the lack of drying or tackiness certainly working in its favour; with other water based lubes we often rely on having a small bottle of water on standby, but this was not needed with the System JO H2O.

Wondering what made this water based lubricant so different to others we have used we looked through the list of ingredients:

Whilst the first listed ingredient is water, the second ingredient is listed as glycerin. Well that certainly explains the extreme sweetness of this lubricant and the moisturising quality, but unfortunately also raises concerns for us.

Glycerin flagged up to me as being one of the ingredients I had recently read to be aware of in lubricants, and so I read some more about it;

Something that may be interesting to readers is that glycerin (Glycerol) can be used as a laxative when introduced into the rectum; it irritates the anal mucosa and induces a hyperosmotic effect, so this may be something to be aware of if you are intending to use it for anal play!

Of more concern to us is that glycerin is also suspected to increase the chance of yeast infections in some women. Note that this does seem to be an area of some debate, and there seems to be ‘evidence’ from both sides of the argument. However, as far as we are concerned, why risk it? – There are other choices of lubricant out there that do not use glycerin, so using one that does (even if there is only a chance of it causing a problem) just doesn’t make sense.

Overall, the System JO H2O lube is a reasonable lubricant for male masturbation and with some slight changes the packaging would be good as ‘travel lube’, however it is a hassle to have different lubes for different activities when other lubes work well in all circumstances, so this would not be on our shopping list in future.

Due to its limited usefulness and glycerin content we rate the System JO H2O at 3/10 for the lube itself, and 2/10 for the lube in the sample tubes purely because they are such a pain to open!
