This is very much a beginner’s strap-on kit. The harness is simple and lacks any fanciness or frills, but it is serviceable. The dildo is short and very slim, which makes it great as an introduction to anal play, or for people with vaginas who might want to try strap-on play with their partners but have difficulties with penetration. Given its low price, this kit has an excellent price-quality ratio, so I absolutely recommend it.

Let’s start with the harness in the Sportsheets Newcomers 5 Inch Silicone Strap On Kit. It’s made entirely from polypropylene fabric, with a velvety crotch-piece. This means this harness is machine-washable, which is a gigantic plus, in my opinion. Hassle-free cleaning is always an important factor with sex toys. It’s also vegan, which could be essential to you.
The harness shape consists of three straps sewn together: the long one goes around your hips, with one end going to each upper corner of the crotch-piece. The two short ones are sown to the longer one and go between your legs, towards the lower point of the crotch-piece. All four ends are sown directly to the nitrile O-ring; this means the O-ring is not replaceable. Since the O-ring has a 1.25 inch/3.2 cm diameter, the harness is only compatible with dildos with a diameter of 1.25 inch and below. I’ve tried it with a 1.25 inch dildo, and it does work. So if you plan on exploring strap-on play with slim dildos for a little while, this could be a really good investment.
This harness in the Sportsheets Newcomers 5 Inch Silicone Strap On Kit isn’t particularly comfortable, but it’s not really uncomfortable either. Its main problem is that its straps lack any kind of padding. That means the strap around your hips may dig into your lower back, and the straps going between your legs may not be very pleasant for your genitals. For me, if I don’t pay attention, they cover most of my vulva and dig slightly into my labia. I have to be careful to move the straps as close to my inner thighs as possible. Nonetheless, it’s definitely a lot more comfortable than similarly-priced thong-style harnesses.
This harness fits people with hips up to 60 inches/152 cm. This is great – too many harnesses exclude fat people. The length of the straps does mean that for me, the excess length trails along my legs and I sometimes sit or lie onto the straps – and I’m not particularly slim. But they are easily tucked away, so I’d much rather that than the other way around. All in all, this harness is nothing impressive, but it’s decent nonetheless.
The dildo that comes with the Sportsheets Newcomers 5 Inch Silicone Strap On Kit is the Sportsheets Please Dildo. This is a short, slim dildo: 5 inches/12.7 cm in length, and a diameter of 0.9 inches/2.2 cm. This is too small for my vagina, which prefers girthier toys, but as I mentioned: people who find penetration with bigger objects uncomfortable might find this is exactly what they need.
Since this dildo is ostensibly meant as a pegging dildo (Sportsheets’ marketing is very straight), I had to try it anally too. I’ve been delving a bit into butt-play, lately, and this dildo was excellent for that purpose: slim enough to never be uncomfortable, long enough to pass through both my sphincters, stiff enough to be easy to insert but its slimness means it’s never unpleasantly pokey. There’s something else I really appreciate in the Please dildo: it’s noticeably if not dramatically curved, which means it’s pretty good at hitting the sensitive spots inside your butt or your vagina. This is something that’s sadly missing in many beginners’ toys, so I am really glad that Sportsheets went that route.
The Please dildo is made entirely from silicone, which means it’s completely body-safe. I wish Sportsheets made only silicone dildos and did away with the rubber and TPR, but they do stock many silicone toys, so as long as you stick to that, you will be fine. It’s only available in purple, which makes me slightly sad, but I’m aware my hatred for purple is a bit irrational.
Care
As I mentioned above, the harness in the Sportsheets Newcomers 5 Inch Silicone Strap On Kit is machine-washable. You can just throw it in with your dirty laundry, hassle-free! You can, of course, also wash it by hand, or just give it a wipe with water and some soap if it’s not too covered in lube and bodily fluids. Be careful not to store it away wet if you don’t want it to start smelling bad.
Since the Please dildo is made from silicone, it is only compatible with water-based lube and non-lubricated condoms – silicone lube could damage it. After use, you can just clean it with water and soap and/or a toy cleaner, or you can sanitise it, if you’d prefer. You can do that by boiling it, or with a 10% bleach solution or rubbing alcohol. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.
Purchasing
The Sportsheets Newcomers 5 Inch Silicone Strap On Kit is a really good deal: the price of the whole set is barely higher than the price of the Please dildo on its own, and you get a harness that might be compatible with other dildos, if you stick to the slim ones. For that reason, I’d say definitely buy this kit if you’ve been eyeing this dildo (or another similarly-sized one).
The box the Sportsheets Newcomers 5 Inch Silicone Strap On Kit comes in is anything but discreet: it features a half-naked strap-on-wearing lady and an equally scantily clad man, as well as a harnessed butt on the verso. It is also rather big for the products it contains, so if it’s discreet and efficient storage you’re after, you’ll probably throw this out upon arrival like I did. If you’re worried about nosy family or housemates during shipping, though, that’s unnecessary: the box will obviously be shipped in a plain, discreet package.
In conclusion, I really recommend the Sportsheets Newcomers 5 Inch Silicone Strap On Kit, whether it’s for vaginal or anal play. It’s good quality, nothing mind-blowing but thoroughly decent, and it should bring you lots of fun and pleasure.
