Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle Review (Bourbon Scent)

Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle Review (Bourbon Scent)

By Cara Sutra

I’m a long-time lover of Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candles. Oh, you won’t find any reviews for them here at Cara Sutra – until today, of course. My experiences with the Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candles were back in the sex toy office days, being treated to samples from the warehouse or allowed to take home what was left of a candle or two used for demonstrations by reps. It’s thanks to Peachy Keen UK that I am writing my very first Actual Real Review for a Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle! They kindly agreed to send one in the scent of my choice, free of charge, in exchange for an honest & unbiased review here at Cara Sutra. Thanks Peachy Keen.

I chose the Bourbon scent Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle for this review. Hey, it’s nearly Christmas! 😉

In the past I’ve tried various scents of the Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle – Pink Lotus was my first, then Blackcurrant, Cucumber and even a special edition here and there which I can’t quite remember the names of but they were refreshing and gorgeous.

It’s not just the beautiful scents which endear me to the Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candles – it’s substance as well as style. Before trying out that very first Pink Lotus variety of Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle, I’d only used the typical £4.99 up to about £10 type massage candles you find in the ‘Sexy Gifts’ or ‘Bedroom Essentials’ part of most sex toy shops. I always found they left a residue on my or my partner’s skin, leaving us either forced to get up and wash it off straight away (hardly relaxing) or drift off to sleep only to wake with a sticky, itchy and/or slimy back – or whichever body part had been massaged. Unpleasant after effects but, as I thought at the time, unavoidable.

Of course upon discovering that I don’t get this unpleasant consequence with Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candles, I was a fully converted fan. Instead of melting to a pourable wax, or softening up to a butter consistency or cream which is moisturised into skin, the Afterglow candles really do melt to a massage oil or clear lotion. Because of the low melting point of the formulation (do NOT ever use household candles in any type of bedroom waxplay games) this massage oil can be drizzled on to sensible areas of your partner’s body either directly from the candle or into your palm and then applied to your lover. The Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle now has a helpful pouring spout to one corner to give your drizzle a lot more accuracy than I had with my first version – several years ago.

What does it smell like?

The Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle in Bourbon Scent doesn’t smell like alcohol, or anywhere near as strong as a brandy or whisky – which is what you’d expect bourbon to smell like (I don’t think they mean the biscuits!). The scent is fairly faint when the candle isn’t lit but once it is, you start getting that sweet but masculine smell – like a hot guy wearing aftershave is cooking caramel from scratch in the kitchen next door.

And there you have your first massage candle fantasy to get you off the ground. 😉

That’s how I’d describe it really – traditionally male aftershave background scents with a main scent of warm caramel. It’s lovely – not as alcoholic as I was expecting but then I guess it wouldn’t be a clever idea to put alcohol into a flammable item.

How does it feel?

There’s no warming up lumps of clay-like material in your hands waiting for it to melt, there’s no cold oil being splashed around your nethers in the name of relaxation. With the Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle you get a gorgeous and translucent massage oil which is warm – and stays warm for a good long time, in your hands and on their body. It does take some time (obviously) for the candle to burn enough and for the solid-at-room-temperature formula of the candle to pool enough to drizzle some out. I’d say about half an hour to get a minimum amount. You need to be able to tilt the candle container without putting the candle out, which means it needs to have burned into the candle material enough to be established.

During play it’s a delight to use this Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle. The easy pour corner could be a little more spout-like, but then I guess Jimmyjane didn’t want to ruin the look. It *is* a very classy item to have on the bedside table – or on the mantelpiece – and discreet enough that you could sit it anywhere you liked, really, without anyone batting an eyelid. Unless they know of Jimmyjane of course – the logo tastefully adorns the bottom of one side of the shiny white square container.

I love that the massage oil is translucent, which makes it look and feel like an actual sensual massage oil rather than just melted candle wax in a slightly more malleable form. The oil doesn’t harden up once it cools, it stays as a massage oil. It’s important that it does this so there’s no residue on the skin either during your massage (the last thing you want is to be rubbing clumps of dried wax up and down your partner’s back and legs) or afterwards (waking up with a cold, sticky, slimy back or otherwise candle-crumb covered body isn’t the best wake-up call in the world – for me, anyway).

Due to the blend used in this Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle the oil feels like it’s moisturising and nourishing my skin, and the heat of the oil is perfect to use on even more sensitive parts of the body like the inner thighs, inner arms and collarbone. There’s no need to worry about it burning someone when you pour it on them, or it feeling too hot when they splash it on you – the massage oil feels like it’s been gently heated in a bain-marie, similar to the temperature of a baby’s bottle.
