Beating Around The Bush
I’m delighted to introduce this week’s sex blogger in the spotlight: Paisley Gilmour from the Beating Around The Bush sex blog. As well as writing for her own blog, Paisley also writes the sex tips and advice column at the Reveal Magazine blog. Recently, Paisley joined the Pleasure Panel and you can find her author page here.
It’s lovely to be able to share some behind-the-scenes details about the fab Paisley Gilmour with you in her spotlight feature below. Stick them kettle on, get comfy then tuck in. Make sure you click through once you’re done to discover all the brilliant articles and reviews on her blog as well as following on her social media.
Over to you, Paisley!
Beating Around The Bush – Sex Blog
Beating Around The Bush is a sex blog I started because I just absolutely love talking about banging. Whether it’s solo sex or a bloody good humpfest, I’m mad about sharing my experiences and hearing other peoples’ perspectives on something that I really don’t think should be kept private or personal.
Women in particular are often shamed into silence about their sexual desires, needs and fantasies. Ladies do not talk about fucking, okay! My aim in creating Beating Around The Bush is to eliminate shame surrounding female masturbation and pleasure, because newsflash, most of us do it.
Advice is hardly something I should be dishing out, considering I’m kind of useless at most things. But that’s what I wanted to create with Beating Around The Bush – a blog for unconfident women written by an unconfident woman. It’s not about sharing How To tips, more like ranting about ridiculous gender-based misconceptions and taking you with me while I fumble my way through life.
Sex Blogger Q&A
What’s your blog name/online handle and how did you come up with the idea?
The idea for my blog was born after I started a weekly sex blog for the magazine I work for. While I love the topics I cover for that, I found there were bits and bobs I wanted to write about that weren’t quite appropriate for the magazine’s audience. Think of Beating Around The Bush as a cassette full of B-sides that didn’t quite make it onto the actual album. It could be because my opinion on a certain topic was a little too extreme or controversial for the average women’s magazine consumer, or because it just wasn’t a good fit. Either way, I aim to try and make it as open, honest and personal as possible.
Which country do you live in?
I’m from the UK and live in London, which gives me amazing access to salons, classes and sex workshops which are a constant source of inspiration for me and Beating Around The Bush.
Approximately how long have you been sex blogging?
While I only started sex blogging a few months ago, I, so far, have loved every single second. Not only do you get to try out incredible (and not-so-incredible) toys and accessories, but you get to blather on about a topic close to your heart. I can’t think of anything more fulfilling. Most of all though, I enjoy knowing that writing about self-pleasure and sex, I’m helping to open up a dialogue and push sex-positive and feminist ideas.
Do your friends know you’re a sex blogger?
All my friends and family know that sex is my special area of interest. To be honest, they couldn’t escape it if they wanted to. I’m constantly talking to them about what I’m working on, asking for their advice or smutty tales, and sending them toys to try out. Even my Mum has been on the receiving end of some pretty risque items of late – I believe everyone should feel free to explore their sexuality, regardless of their age. And 60 is never too old to get vibing.
Do you use social media? If so, where can we find you?
I’m obsessed with social media, but really quite crap at it. I can be found on Twitter: @paisleyrgilmour and on Facebook under the name Paisley Gilmour Journalist. Bear with me, I’m learning. And be prepared for a hell of a lot of oversharing.
Have you ever done anything specifically so you can blog about it afterwards?
Every week I attempt to do something specifically so I can blog about it afterwards, whether it’s attending a class on how to be more dominant, or letting a dungeon master teach me how to give a better gob job. I’ll try pretty much anything once.
If not already a professional blog: would you say you’re looking to earn a living from blogging eventually, or will it remain a hobby?
Sex blogging is just something that I do alongside my day job at the moment, but who knows what the future holds.
Tell us about some other sex bloggers you admire, and why.
Girl on the Net is a sex blogger I truly admire. As part of my day job I had the pleasure of meeting her for an interview, in the lead up to the launch of her ridiculous and hilarious book How A Bad Girl Fell In Love. Her blog story is really incredible, considering she started just as a bit of fun and ended up being a published author. Plus, she’s really bloody funny.
Some of the sex toys that feature on my Top List are ever-changing, but at the moment I am absolutely head over heels with the Ann Summers Rabbit Ears Vibrator from their Moregasm Contour range. For a clitoral stimulator, it’s something a bit different. Plus the new and improved version is just so soft. I’m also currently loving Rocks Off Finger Tingles, it’s like nothing I’ve used before. While it might seem like a simple concept, it is fabulous for clit stim.
The Doxy Wand Massager is an item that will never ever be knocked out of my Top Three. Ludicrously powerful, mind-blowing and expertly made, it really does blow your knickers off. I recommend them to anyone and everyone I meet.
