Scandarella Sex Blogger
This week’s sex blogger in the spotlight has a fairly new blog, but Scandarella has definitely got plenty of experience in sex toy testing and being a fab part of the sex blogging community. Scandarella is also a valuable member of the Pleasure Panel, the Cara Sutra community of guest reviewers and sex toy testers. Now you can find out about Scandarella in greater detail, in her lovely spotlight feature below. Thanks for stepping into the spotlight this week, Scandarella!
I’m Ella Scandal, owner of and sole author at Scandarella.com.
I blog about sex toys, and the occasional piece of bondage equipment, and I also write smutty little stories too. I read them to my husband, and if they get his motor running, they get published on the site.
Thanks for checking out my little Spotlight piece! If you like it I’d love to see you over at the blog!
What’s your blog name/online handle and how did you come up with the idea?
My blog name is Scandarella, and when I correspond with readers or businesses I sign off with Ella Scandal.
A friend and I had been talking about whether or not I should create a blog, and we had a good giggle thinking up names. My husband was coming up with suggestions like, The Nobbit, and Lady of the Cock Rings, to mention a few, and though some of the more sensible ones he plucked out of his head were good, they were too sex toy specific. I wanted something that would show that the blog wasn’t just sex toys, so I said I’d sleep on it and the conversation turned to other things.
I did sleep on it, and in the small hours of the morning I jumped out of bed, grabbed a pen and my bedside notebook and scribbled a few lines, using the light off my mobile phone to see. I looked the next day, and I’d written,
“SCANDARELLA – play on Cinderella (who was a slave to her bitch sisters so quite submissive). Also ‘scandal’ is a good word to cover erotica and sex toy stuff, and if I switch it up I get Ella Scandal to use as a pen name. Huzzah!”
We checked to see if the domain name was available, and it was, so I snapped it up.
Which country do you live in?
I live in the North East of England.
My blog went live on the 19th January 2016, so around 9 weeks. I’ve been reviewing much longer, though. Almost 2 years at Lovehoney, and 6 months for the Pleasure Panel.
Why did you start a sex blog or reviewing sex toys?
I first started reviewing sex toys when, after going through some marital problems, my husband and I came across Lovehoney while rebuilding our broken relationship. We’d shopped there for a couple of months before I discovered the forums and reviews. My love of writing prompted me to start reviewing our purchases, and before long we were being sent testers, and I was an avid forum member.
In time, I followed some friends to Twitter, and got to know a group of amazing women very well. Their support and friendship gave me the confidence not only to put myself forward for the Pleasure Panel here at Cara Sutra, but also to share one of the sexy stories I’d written for my husband with them. Their response was so positive it stunned me, and after I thawed, I cried.
I toyed with the idea of putting together erotica collections and self-publishing them as e-books, but my lack of confidence in myself wouldn’t let me commit, so it remained nothing but talk, and I contented myself with reviewing, and writing my tales just for me and my husband.
The decision to finally create a blog came about after someone who meant a lot to me died. It was expected, but he was only 36, and one of the things he’d always told me was that if there was something I wanted I should go all out to get it, because I’d regret it if I didn’t. His death put things in to perspective for me, and I realised I was letting my own fear of failure hold me back from taking what I loved to its full potential.
Within the week, Scandarella was born, and as well as sex toy reviews, I have an erotica section on there too. I’m finally ready to do what I love to do for real, and to let people see what I can do. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
What’s your favourite thing about blogging?
On a selfish note, I love the sheer amount of writing that’s involved in blogging. I’ve given myself a target of (at the very least) two reviews per week, and two erotica pieces per month, which might not sound like much, but that’s on top of reviewing for the Pleasure Panel and other places outside of the blog whenever the opportunity arises.
The other thing I love about blogging is reader feedback. I’ve had a number of private messages on Twitter from people telling me that this or that review had helped them make decisions about purchases, and they actually thank me for helping them choose right first time. Knowing I’ve helped someone in such a way makes me feel really good.
I’ve also had a couple of very positive responses to the erotica on the site, and those comments I hold close to my heart. I love that people are enjoying my stories, and I hope I continue to produce stuff that keeps them coming back.
Do you use social media? If so, where can we find you?
I do! I use Twitter on a daily basis, so that’s probably the best place to find me. I also have a Facebook page, Pinterest, and Instagram, though I haven’t utilised them much yet.
Do your friends know you’re a sex blogger?
Some of my closest friends do, yes, but they have no idea what my site is called and they never will if I can help it. Most of them are pleased that I’ve plucked up the courage to do it, but a few of them think I’m perverted. Like I said though, the ones who are supportive ask me for advice on sex toys, beginner’s bondage gear, and lingerie, and I’ve even given a couple of the more hesitant ones a few intro level things to ignite the spark, and it’s worked too.
Have you ever done anything specifically so you can blog about it afterwards?
Not at this stage I haven’t, no. I want the blog to be organic, and I think trying to cultivate experiences for no other reason than to have something to blog about would be stepping away from that. I can’t rule it out for the future, because you never know what’s going to happen to change how you do things. I have tried sex toys in ways other than their intended purpose to make sure I have all angles covered for a review, though.
Share with us a funny or interesting experience that’s happened to you in the course of your blogging.
- I’ve not been blogging all that long, so there hasn’t really been time for anything worth sharing to happen to me. In the time I’ve been using sex toys though… there’s been a few giggles. Here’s a little selection of the ones that have stuck with me:
- I’ve had such intense orgasms with the Lelo Ella it’s gotten stuck and I’ve had to go out with it still inside me.
- I’ve had a kegel ball fall out during a busy birthday barbecue, and it rolled around inside the top of my boot for a bit before it escaped and a friend found it in the grass.
- I accidentally electrocuted my husband’s butt cheeks to the point where his muscles were making him twerk, and I laughed so hard I fell off the bed and couldn’t save him until he’d completely gone off e-stim altogether.
- I’ve had an aluminium butt plug turn my anus green!
Will you still be blogging in 5 years time?
I sincerely hope so. It’s my dream to be a published novelist one day, but even if that happens, I’d like to think that Scandarella will live on. I’m always going to enjoy writing quickie erotica, I’m always going to use sex toys, and my love for bondage is never going to go away, so as long as people still want to visit the blog, I don’t see any reason why I would stop.
If not already a professional blog: would you say you’re looking to earn a living from blogging eventually, or will it remain a hobby?
I don’t know if I’d say I’m looking to earn a living from Scandarella, but I would like to get myself into a position where the blog starts to at least pay for itself. I think my biggest hope where blogging is concerned is that my writing catches someone’s eye who can help me turn it into a career.
Tell us about three other bloggers you admire, and why.
What an evil question, lol. It’s pretty hard to narrow down this down to just three names, because I follow so many amazing blogs and each of them offers something different, whether it be in the form of whiplash, no nonsense reviews, engrossingly educational articles, or super-hot erotica.
There is a corner of my heart that will always belong to The Carnal Queen, though. She’s been one of my favourite bloggers for a while now, and I love her writing style, as well as the pieces she chooses to review. Our tastes follow similar paths, and I’ve made many purchases based on her reviews, even before I knew her personally. Each one of them has been a hit, so I have huge faith in her opinions and will continue to seek them out.
CQ has also been instrumental in bringing Scandarella into the world, and without all of the help I received from her and the Carnal King, I would still be staring at my laptop, wondering where to start and knowing I probably wasn’t going to. So as well as my respect, she deserves my thanks.
Another blogger I have much respect for is Dangerous Lilly. Her reviews are always entertaining, and she pulls no punches if something doesn’t meet her standards. I’ve learned a lot from her articles, especially those on sex toy safety and the dangers of porous, toxic materials. She’s not just a blogger, she’s an educator, and while there are many other bloggers who write fantastic educational pieces, Lilly is one of the best.
And last but certainly not least, I’m going to have to be teacher’s pet and say The Cara Sutra. I always look up to successful women, and Cara is one of the most successful women in the sex blogging industry I can think of. She’s moulded a career out of what she does, and has made herself so much more than just a blogger.
Cara takes no crap from anyone, she’s not afraid to speak her mind, and she is respected by not only her readers, but also businesses and bloggers too. She gives veteran and newbie bloggers a platform, with posts like the one I’m writing now and the Pleasure Panel, and her brand just keeps on growing.
[from Cara: thank you! *blush* ]
If you review sex toys, what are the top three toys you wish you could get your hands on next?
My biggest sex toy wishes would be to have to be:
Bad Dragon Tentacle
Visually, porn does nothing for me. I do get turned on listening to it, provided it doesn’t sound like the leading lady is being flayed alive, but watching it? Nope. However, there is something about Hentai, or more specifically Hentai involving tentacles, that always manages to completely arouse me. The Bad Dragon Tentacle dildo gives me the same feels every time I see it, and I totally resent the international postage costs and the UK Customs service for making it such a risky purchase.
The tie-dyed Vixen Mustang
It looks absolutely stunning, for a start, and I’ve heard that VixSkin is some supremely squishy silicone! I’ve trained myself to climax with just clitoral stimulation (which took yonks) but there’s something special about the feeling of being penetrated by a chunky dildo that I can’t resist. I know that I love Tantus, and that I’m quite fond of G-Silicone too, so I’m dying to know how I feel about Vixen.
The Keep Burning Cock Skull Dildo
This thing appeals to so many sides of my nature it’s untrue! It’s delightfully macabre, so the goth-girl in me would be more than happy, and at 8” insertable with an 8” circumference, it looks big enough to satisfy the size-queen in me too. Whether vaginally or anally, I love being penetrated with big things, so this dildo looks right up my alley.
Who is your favourite adult shopping company, and why?
There are a lot of fantastic shops out there, many of which I use regularly, but I think Lovehoney have to be my favourite. I feel this way for many reasons, including familiarity. I’ve shopped there for a few years, and with their no quibble, year-long returns policy I’ve felt free to take risks on purchases I wouldn’t normally have considered.
Their customer services are some of the best I’ve ever come across too. Any refunds I’ve requested have been processed super-fast, and whenever I’ve had a problem with a broken product – even ones I’ve had as testers – it’s been resolved quickly, and usually with a better outcome than I’d expected.
Do you prefer blogging fictional erotica, real life sex anecdotes or factual based content such as reviews and advice guides?
As the blog stands, I prefer to split my focus between erotica and reviews. The reason for this is, erotica takes longer to write because it’s made up, and if I tried swaying more heavily in that direction, the frequency of published posts would decrease quite significantly.
Giving half of my blogging time to reviews means that there’ll be new content published a few times a week. Though business requested reviews will always take priority, I have a large collection of sex toys and, whether as a couple or alone, they get used daily, so *fingers-crossed* I’ll never run out of things to review.
