Why Can’t I Keep My Butt Plug In? How Long Can I Wear An Anal Sex Toy?

Why Can’t I Keep My Butt Plug In?

Q: Hi my girlfriend bought me a vibrating remote control butt plug for me to wear out and about, however it keeps coming out. I’ve used anal beads and a Rocks-Off U-shaped vibrator, both of which stay in, but I can’t keep the plug in.

The neck isn’t overly tight, so it’s awkward to keep in so is there a way to train my arse muscles so it can stay in especially if I wear it out and about?

The only other question is how long is it safe to wear a plug for?

A: It’s worth persevering with your plug to see if you can master it, but perhaps keep it housebound for now. You may find that the plug is slipping out because you’re concentrating on it too much, and it’s causing you to make subconscious movements that are working against your wish to keep it in. It could also be that the plug is not quite right for you, or simply needs practice to acclimatise to the shape. We’re all different, so keep trying!

Try to get used to wearing the plug and allow yourself to forget about it. Pop it in, stick on a movie and veg out. Just relax and do nothing at all. You want to clear your mind of any sexy thoughts and just stop thinking about it. Your body will relax around it and start to get used to it being there, just give it time to acclimatise to the sensations. Lots of people find that when they forget the plug’s there, keeping it in is easy work.

If after several tries you’re still failing, it may be time to give up on that particular plug. It’s unfortunate, but not every toy will be the perfect fit for every body. There’s no exact science to butt plugs or which ones fit folk best and f you’re not suffering from anal leakage then don’t blame your ass. It might just be that this plug unfortunately isn’t the right size/shape/weight combo for your body.

It can take some time to find the best shapes for you, and you may find that your compatibility with toys is different to your partner. Lots of couples road test cheaper butt plugs first to find the shapes and materials that work best for them, so perhaps find the right shape and style in a non-vibrating plug before you splash out on your next dream RC model.

Try plugs with different-length stems (the part between the main curve of the plug and the base), different shaped plugs and different weights. You can also experiment with curves and base types to get a better idea of works with your body. Couple’s toys are often expensive purchases, so it’s worth doing some homework first. It’s worth remembering that Lovehoney will accept returns for any sex toy that doesn’t work out, for whatever reason, within 365 days of purchase. If you really hit a duff plug, you can send it back for a refund.

There’s no concrete recommendation for how long you can wear a butt plug safely. I’d suggest that wearing it for 3 or 4 hours at a time wouldn’t be a problem (your body allowing, it may have other ideas), but I’ve heard many people say that they sleep whole nights away wearing them. So long as you give it a thorough clean with antibacterial cleaner between insertions, and use plenty of lube, you should be all good. But always listen to what your body wants, if you feel like you’ve had enough then take it out.
